Default Installing Valve Spring with heads on the car

Well during the winter I want to do some more bolt ons and one is 1.6 rockers and everyone says don't reuse the stock springs so 99.9% sure at this point im going to change them. Just wondering how hard it is to do this with the heads still on the car or is it worth it to just take the heads off? which mean headers intake and all that have to come off. So input from people have done this would be nice.

leave them on. Just get the right tool for the job and its easy. Get something similar to the "Tims valve spring tool." look it up on here. its in the fabrication section. easy as pie

Yea a lot of guys go with 1.7 on bolt on cars...

1.6 are good for 10-15 so maybe you will gain 15-20 with the 1.7s....not really sure I haven't seen any dyno numbers on a back to back comparison from 1.6s to 1.7s....

As for the springs they are pretty easy to do it in the car as long as your back holds out...lol

I put the car up on stands so I don't have to lean over so far and use "Tim's tool"....not to bad give yourself a Full Saturday to do it...

yeah gonna be doing all the Florida "winter" stuff considering my track is closed for 3 weeks during the winter and thats it lol. But 15-20 HP is major in my book for a bolt on car that paired of with the Lid we should see how much my car picks up. But would probably need new push rods and will the length change at all considering the different ratio?

http://www.kyfbodies.org/vb/showthread.php?t=9143 Here is your back to back dyno comparison on 1.6rr vs. 1.7rr. This guy gained 15rwhp with the 1.7rr over the 1.6rr.

Wow thats quite impressive I can imagine the gains being quite a bit more from 1.5 non rollers to the 1.7 full rollers being some where in the 20-25 Rwhp range

Yeah just thought to myself I'm going to get the DR's do some runs with what I have now then do the Rockers then go back out there and have some track results from the change and see how much it helped at the Track "the real dyno" lol

I have changed my valve springs without removing the heads a couple of times. All you have to do is follow the firing order and work on two cylinders at every 1/4 crank revolution when the corresponding pistons are at TDC. You dont need compressed air or rags or whatever. The valve will sit on the piston top when the spring is compressed for disassembly.

Did all of ya'll use the "Tim's Tool" or something else? I've used the pry bar looking ones that you see on the shelf at the local parts store with older cars, but I hear they don't work well on LT1's. (I don't see what the difference would be?)

I used Crane 99473-1 valve spring compressor.
The pry bar tools dont work on 4rth gen F Bodies because of space limitations for the rear cylinders.

damm, 15 whp with just 1.7, i noticed that he has a cam too, i think that does some affect, i dont think that with a stock cam with 1.6 to 1.7 there will be so much gain.
I just got some 1.6 and are installing them next week, reading this wish i got 1.7.
