Default cars dead thinking electrical

I was driving my 94 z28 home from work tonight and slowed down to go over a speed bump when the car died I smelled something strange I think it might have been electrical the gauge cluster is completely dead no light and the needles are not working the horn doesn't work and obviously the engine doesn't do anything but everything else electrical is working
I'm completely lost on what caused this and where to start I'm thinking steering colunm... any ideas?

Ignition switch or it's connection would be another suspect.

I'll check the battery but don't think that's the issue because everything else electrical is working and that wouldn't explain the gauge panel not working but of course I will check it to make sure
No I pushed it home lucky it waited till I was just around the corner to die
I was kinda thinking that it might have something to do with the ignition switch also

+1 on the ignition switch. I had the exact same problem with mine about 6 months ago. They are a pain to get to, but that is where i would look.

My car shut off while driving not to long ago and it ended up being the fuse to the ignition. I wired my EWP through it and that was too much for it I guess. Thats a simple thing to check first.

In the shbox articule it says that the ignition switch issue will also knock out the fuel pump but I can still hear it coming on could the ignition switch still be the issue?

All you have to do is test for voltage on fuses that are powered when the ignition switch is turned on. If they don't have power, it's probably switch related. Non-switched powered fuses will have power all the time. Do some testing to get it figured out.
