Default Spec 3+ Users...

Found a great deal on new Spec 3+ clutch kit for my build. A buddy is parting his car and going lsx so its up for grabs and im looking for a clutch. I didnt want the Spec 3 puck design as i know its grabby and not the easiest for street driving. I was going to pull the trigger on the Ram Powergrip which another local has been using at the same power levels and took about a 100 passes and held up no problem. I came across this 3+ which is alot more streetable then the regular 3. Im looking for your reviews on this clutch for engagement and streetability with your power level.

Thanks!

you should get a turbo 400 if your going to drag race her. but for street driving i use to like the spec 3, but it was easy for me to push the clutch in with my size 20 shoe and 250lbs behind it. i Have also drove a vette with a ram clutch, but im not sure if it was the powergrip or not. I also liked that clutch ... it was a little stiff in a few spots tho

I ran the regular Spec 3 for several years, then last year switched to the 3+. Honestly, the 3+ is alot smoother engagement and has yet to show me any signs of slipping. But then again, it doesn't have many miles on it at all. Very streetable clutch though.

I've ran both clutches. The RAM had clutch dragging problems, but held power very well. I am running the Spec 3+ now and it's a fantastic clutch thus far.

i had one all summer(switching to a auto now) but it was a awesome clutch, i could dd if i wanted then go to the track and dump it at 4 with slicks and not worry about any slipping, i would recommend this clutch over any.. well iv only had this and a centerforce. so i say go for it.. and just to give you a idea how street able it is, i had 4.10s in my rear, ended up blowing them up, and just put 2.73s to get me through the summer, so if you can take off with 2.73s with a clutch that holds up to 800 fts of tq then i would say its street able.

I have had the 3+ in my LT1 for about 2 years and 5000 miles. As far as holding power, that is a given, it holds great, never slips. I used to daily drive my car and it was fine, only one complaint. After some stop and go the clutch starts to make a weird sound, almost like a heavy whistle sound when slipping it, its hard to describe. Does it when it gets hot I think. Pedal is a heavier than stock but that's expected. Engagement is smooth though, much smoother than a puck design I had in previous vehicle. Since my car only makes around 360 rwhp, if I were to do it again I would probably do a 2+, but I really have nothing bad to say about the clutch.

Pros.
  • The Spec 3+ holds very well and does not have any significant chatter.
  • Is very unlikely to not encounter "full release" issues that tend to plague LT1 clutch applications because the disk does not have marcel springs. This means it does not compress when clamped.
  • Should last a rather long time if driven properly.

Cons.
  • Disk weighs in at 7 pounds compared to stock 4.5 pounds. This causes noticably slower shifts due to the tranny gears and syncros taking longer to "speed match" during shifts. In short, its that inertia thing.
  • Heavier disk also makes it take longer to get the tranny in 1st gear when shifting from neutral. Inertia again.
  • Engages and disengages very quickly compared to stock again due to a non marcel spring disk. Its not severe but noticable and annoying.
  • Does not like to be slipped and will get hot quick and quickly fade.
  • Cost.
I had this clutch and grew tired of the fast engage/disengage points and the slower and slightly harder shifts due to the extreme weight of the disk. I sold it in near perfect condition and went with a Competition Clutch stage 2 ($250 shipped) and totally love this clutch. The CC is only slightly heavier than stock and drives near stock and significantly better than the Spec 3+. The grip is close to the Spec 3+ but adequate for my application.

My two cents.

Many have release issues with that clutch. Install it correctly and hope for the best.
