Default Thinking about removing my oil cooler...

just want to know if there is any benifit to removing it besides getting more oil pressure.. Right now I have the Rad. removed and since the GM hose to bypass it is discontinued what other options do I have for hose replacement...or should I just leave it as it is and call it a day...

The bypass hose is not discontinued that I know of. Still shows up any place I look it up online. 10197675

Sometimes the later model cooler can get clogged. It also gives another point for potential coolant leakage into the oil.

Maybe I'm missing something here.
I just removed the cooler adapter brick from between the block and filter adapter.
Voila ... no more oil cooler.

Just take out the passage from water pump to oil cooler line and put in a freeze plug, that's what I did and seen it elsewhere. Works good. I just put in a nice sized rubber plug in the radiator where it goes to oil cooler and no leaks. 40cents for the freeze plug and 4 bucks for a set of a bunch of different sized plugs. Used plugs from the same set to plug up the throttle body coolant hoses. Same result, no leaks. And it was super easy.

I orderd this on SDPC and it was marked as discontinued..GM no longer makes this hose..Does anyone know where I can get one...or know a cross-refrence hose that will fit..I really need this by the end of the week........

How much more oil pressure does this give you? Maybe that was why my 95 z28 had such poor oil pressure. Does this by-pass cause any problems?

I jumped on NAPA prolink and ran the interchange and this part number came up 10959 for a "napa" brand hose. I am not sure if it is correct since it doesn't look like an upper radiator hose.

Lucky you I'm not close to a napa store...you got a link to it?

10959 is the proper Napa number, or a Gates 18959 - same thing.

I am not sure if it is correct since it doesn't look like an upper radiator hose.
Why would it look like an upper hose?

I don't know what to tell you. I just looked at 5 online GM parts sources that did not show it discontinued. Even SDPC let me put it in a shopping cart without saying it was discontinued. Hopefully an aftermarket solution can be found locally.

I orderd from SDPC also, but receved an email shortly saying...UNFORTUNATELY, GM HAS DISCONTINUED THIS PART. THERE IS NO STOCK AVAILABLE & THE PART HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED. I DO APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVIENCE. THANK YOU!
Guess I have to go with the Napa one..

I thought you needed to change the radiator hose to bypass that thing? Or maybe that was how my LS1 was I can't remember.

You can walk into any Advance (Dayco) or Oreilly's(Gates) and get one because there are factory cars that did not have oil coolers that have to have that hose, ie mine never had one!

This sounds like it's the correct hose, it says w/o oil cooler. I'm thinking about doing this as well because I already have it taken off to do the oil pan bolts. I would definitely do anything for more oil pressure. Also, if it's one less place for oil to leak from I'm all for it.

Can anyone elaborate on how to remove the cooler block from the oil filter adapter? Would it be better to leave the block there so it has some cool air circulation?

Actually i'm doing the same thing when putting my 383 in. The metal pipes with rubber hoses crimped on them ataching to the aluminum oil filter adapter and the radiator and water pump is discontinued thru GM. However awhile back they had like some NOS (new old stock) stuff and got one new. i'm guessing your car is pre 96? I bought a 96 camaro a year or so ago to make a few bucks on and i noticed that they must have done away with the oil cooler. So i bought hoses from my local parts store for a 96 and that will bypass the cooler. Just simply remove the aluminum housing and buy this hose. It goes straight from the water pump to the radiator. hope that helps.

You want to remove the whole thing (see post #3). It is a simple matter when you look at it.

This diagram helped me a ton! Looks like 141 gets completely removed (the cooler block), 142 (adapter) gets put back into the block and the filter gets put on just as normal.

Is there anything you cant do?

Just wanted to get a picture up here for myself and anyone else searching, I'm 99.9% sure this is how it should be. This is what was left over after I took out the oil cooler. I took the two bolts out seen here and cut the extra metal stud on top so it was flush with the head of the bolt (if you havent taken it apart yet it might sounds confusing, but it is very straight forward). I bolted those back up with no extra gasket (there wasnt one when I took it off, BUT fel pro included one with my oil pan gasket kit. This is still debatable.) So this should be the finished product where the oil filter screws on to.

Anyone know the part number for the taller oil filter I can use now that I've got that cooler out of the way?

wait so this really is just like the TPI L98 cooler...

in-a-nutshell... it takes coolant from the radiator... sends it to a "cooler" block around the oil filter, then sends the coolant back to water pump...?? am i following this right?

so its using 195-200*F coolant to "cool" engine oil that normally is the same if not already cooler temp???

it doesnt even have oil running to the radiator.. it uses coolant to circulate around the filter... right?

this is lame.. just the like L98 "cooler"... i had an oil temp gauge in my pan.. my oil was always 180-195*... but my water temps were 200+.. course thats at the head, not at the bottom of the radiator..

by the way...how is that going to get you more oil pressure?
