Possible reasons why my car is shooting flames out of the exhaust?
Car is a 1995 Z28 with 110k. It has no cat and a magnaflow catback. I noticed an increase in fuel consumption before I stored the car this Winter. Could it be running rich?
I had my friends following me the other day, they noticed when I came onto it, flames came out of both exhaust pipes.
I think this car is on it's original opti. But other than the fuel consumption, the car is performing excellent (Lots of power for a 16 year old car).
No idea where to start on this one. All the maintenance items are up to date except for the 02 sensors. (No SES light either)

Only way to tell if it's actually running rich/lean is to put a wide-band on it.
On another note though, my friends 93 Formula blew small flames out of the exhaust on a regular basis, and his car ran like no other, so I wouldn't say it's completely out of the ordinary.

agreed.........espically if its a straight through exhaust with no cats its possible to get a little pop here or there...........mine will do that with full exhaust if i back off the throttle up at a really high rpm........i left the tune kinda rich up there off the throttle to help lubricate the walls on the way down from 8000+rpm.....
I'll order some 02 sensors, hopefully that will fix the running rich problem.
How would I address a timing issue?

My car used to do this all the time, it ended up being an opti. It was missing spark causing unburnt fuel air mix to collect in the exhaust and once it caught a fired cylinder it would detonate and shoot a fireball out of the back of my car. I blew my friends hat off in the car behind me according to him. It was kinda funny.

I'll try the 02 sensors first. Car isn't misfiring and is working like a champ... I'd rather not fork over the cash for an opti.
I'm hoping it's because I have straight exhaust.
