Default Rain problems

So In St. Louis it has rained about every other day for about 3 weeks. When driving in the rain, my car runs really rough. It's also worse when under a load like going up a hill. It almost chokes out but the rpms are fine and I never threw a code or anything.

I've Read that it could be my O2 sensors getting wet. When I put my long tubes on I had to extend the two o2's that go into the collector. The others I had tuned out. Could it be the wires or sensors getting wet? I let the car sit for a few days and then it ran fine. But the weird part was I drove home from college and it ran fine for the first hour but the last 20 to 30 mins the problem came back and there was no moisture at all. Anybody had any ideas?

Also, on several occasions I have smelled gas, like the car was running rich. I haven't checked my mpg but I think it's going to be lower

I was just reading another post about a guy running his car without o2's and it fouled his plugs. Think that could be the case with mine?

if the rear 02s are tuned out, then its fine. you dont need them.
u need to find out if its running rich. pull a couple of plugs out and check them.
or get it on a scanner and check the readings.
is the car a six spd, or auto?
if the problem occurs when the car goes into closed loop i would look into the upstream 02s.
whatever you do, dont assume anything and start throwing parts at it. find the problem and fix it, dont waste a bunch of money.
all people can do on here is give suggestions, you have the car in your hands, so get to it.

What year is this LT1? Vented Opti?

I think you have moisture in the distributor.

Its a 97 so it has the vented opti. I thought it could be the opti but I really hope not because i just replaced it 9 months ago. But as far as I know, the rear o2's still work and only the fronts were tuned out. But I could be wrong. I will try and check the plugs tomorrow. Also, it is an automatic, but what exactly do you mean by closed loop?

Ok so my car runs rough all the time now. It doesnt matter how you drive it. I pulled some plugs (only 3, its a pita with headers) and they looked fine. But my mpg dropped from 17+ to 12-13 all highway miles. Plus, I let it sit for about a week and when I started it back up it was spitting carbon and black stuff out my exhaust. So im pretty sure its running rich.

Check the intake gaskets with some brake fluid or carb cleaner to see if they are leaking.

Yeah I checked those a while back with my plugs. I have them zip tied away from my headers and all of them seemed to be fine.

So I finally fixed it now. I pulled out the o2 sensor and it was jet black from running so rich. The entire passenger side was running extremely rich and fouled out the plugs. So i got new plugs and wires installed. Then I looked at the o2. I figured even if it wasnt the cause it prob needed replaced. So i replaced it with a new delphi unit (about $45) and also bought the o2 extension with connectors instead of splicing the wires myself and now it runs great!
