Default A4 qustions

I blew the trans in my 94 z28 A4 yesterday and have been looking around for another one I had one wrecking yard say that only another 94 trans will work. Also I was wondering if a 2x4 trans out of a truck will work

Think some of those input and output shaft sizes and lengths are different from trucks to F-bodies. Not 100% about that but I thought I had a trans shop tell me that. May be worng though.

as long as its from a 94 2wd truck or impala/caprice it will work.. you will need to swap the tailshaft housing

But it does have to be a 94? It can't be a different year? Why is that what changed on them?

A truck transmission will work, but there are some tabs on the sides of the bellhousing that will need to be grinded off. I used a transmission out of a 96 GMC 1500 in my old 97 camaro. The tailshafts have to be changed and I went ahead and had all the seals replaced. A V6 S10 transmission will work also along with the caprice, again the tailshafts will need replacing. Make sure to just use the 2x4 trannies and not 4x4. They will not work without major surgery.

Im not sure of the technical terms but the torque converter lockup is different in the electronics in the 94 models. You can convert them over but Im not sure how. A 94 model transmission is hard to come by but they are out there.

Would a manual torque converter lock out switch work to solve that problem then?

If you are up for a bit of wiring you can use a newer transmission. Here is how to do it. You have to add one wire into the large trans plug to the pcm blue connector pin #6 for the PWM TCC lock up. Then flash the pcm with a 95 file. http://shbox.com/1/harness_connector_faces.htm click the 4L60E tab at the bottom. If you get anything other than an F-body trans the tail housing will not have the bolt holes for the torque arm mount. You would also need to change to the new style speed sensor connector or change the tail housing and use what you have.

Well I did find a guy on craiglist that is selling a trans out of a 94 pickup and waiting for him to anwser me back. If I get that trans and put the tailshaft off mine onto it it will be a direct bolt in right? And will the trucks torque converter work or will I need to buy a new one?

I haven't had the chance to tear it down and look at it but basicly what happed I went to go jump into traffic and the car jerked hard made a loud clunking noise and the abs light came on. I kept driving it and it made a clunking noise every time it shifted. Now I have no forward gears what so ever the abs light went back off but reverse works without any problem

I had my Transmission guy change tailshaft but I think it is just a direct swap. He didnt even charge me to do it. The truck converter will work but is a little tighter than the Fbody one. I used the one out of the truck with no problems.
