Default Puck's SR 383 build: Results for PTV and PR length

Got my new PR length tool in yesterday (since my old one was too short), and got to measure my PTV and PR length today.

Even with 0-decked block, milled heads, large valves, high lift, and a decent duration SR cam I've got ton's of PTV clearance: Measured .075" INT and .1" EXH...well above the minimum recommended . I've seen people run as tight as .030" without issue. That is with just the damper spring installed, so I will get another .02" or so with the real spring. I was expecting to have a lot less.

Pushrods measured 7.88" end to end, so I'll be calling trend to order some 3/8 .135 thick-walled pushrods in the proper length tomorrow (7.85? 7.875?).

Eh, it took me 4 years to build my Chevelle. It's just time and a ton of money!

Only 12:1...

I wanted more, but with these big heads its hard to get good CR without dome pistons. I milled the heads down (and lost 7ccs and a few CFMs in the process), am running the .026 VR gasket, and block is zero decked.

Once I get the tool to remove springs with heads installed(I only have the clamp style one for heads off the car), I can tq down the heads and once the PRs come in I can throw on the intake...its going to be a complete engine finally after 3 years . Timing cover, Oil pump, pickup, and pan are all installed already.

Not quite done yet though..."To Do" list is currently some fuel lines, an AFPR, a hub/damper, and a computer system - going with Wickeds Opti-Trigger setup using a trimmed factory harness. Hopefully he can get me some more RPMs out of it .

The new style Pressure fed COMP Endure-X. 888-16's IIRC. They are now tool steel axles, extra oil groove, and pressure fed...unlike the older style COMP SR lifters.

LE recommended them for me. I think FFB put something like 8000 street/cruising miles on his without issue, and knowledgeable builders on sites like speedtalk use them as well.

Ah... so the lifter body is about the same length as stock, but still link bar style?

I think they are slightly taller then stock, in a link bar style.

Haven't put one side by side to a stocker.

I'm wondering if you can still put them in/take them out with the heads on? That is the one thing I hate about the Iskys I have is the heads must come off...

With zero deck and the .026" VR head gasket, on a high reving solid roller engine .............. aren't you worried about "rod stretch" and possible piston to cylinder head clearence issues?

Nope .

I am definitely on the tighter side, but I think it will be fine. NA SBCs love sub-.040 quench.

Bottom end is half filled and has forged H-beams with huge L-19 rod bolts - I shouldn't have a problem spinning to ~7500rpms with my modest all motor power goals.

Which brings up my next question: Using those huge L-19 rod bolts with that 3.750" stroke crank ............ did you break into any water jackets during clearencing of the block? I know you half filled it, but, did you "hit water" during clearencing which required the half fill, or did everything "swing" without any water jacket intrusion?
