Default 4-bolt main dipstick clearance options

Hi all!

Have done some extensive searching on this and couldn't find much in the way of my problem. I have a Canton 242t oil pan and Lokar dipstick for my 383 4-bolt main build (Callies splayed caps).

As expected, I had to cut the dipstick tube to get it to clear the main cap...no biggie...

BUT...How do I prevent the actual dipstick from getting caught up in the counterweights of the crankshaft? I noticed there is an "access hole for the dipstick to slide into on the oil pan but after looking with a bore scope I found that that does not much in the way of securing the dipstick from the crankshaft. It just kind of flaps around in there...

Any ideas on how I can prevent the dipstick from being completely nommed by the crankshaft?

I had to cut the dip-stick pipe back a couple inches too. That was the only way I could get a good seal and not leak oil down at the block. I was going to cut the dip-stick and just use it to plug the hole so no oil blows out the tube.

Thanks for the reply...so what did you end up doing for a dip stick? Are you just plugging the whole and checking oil with a dipstick whenever its necessary? I just don't want to risk shredding the dipstick apart...

I'm puzzled by the comments I've read where people say they have oil blowing or leaking profusely out of the oilpan/dipstick hole. It would almost seem like there is no windage tray being used or excessive blowby?

OP,
All I did was bend the tube back maybe 1/2" and it slid in with no problems. Haven't had any interference issues either.

yea you shouldn't have any issues.......i ran the stock dipstick on mine and ive got some big *** billet main caps.......i just cut the tube back and stuck the dip stick in........its been in there four years now and has never once hit the crank.........it should be fine......

just dont put the tube in and bend it so it clears............cause then you cant pull the damn thing out without pulling the pan.........which means raising the motor on these cars.............just saying cause i know a guy (achem me) that did that

What I did was bend the tube as I put it in.

Just the exact answer I was looking for. Here is a picture of what it looks like...I can only hope the access hole in the pan will keep the dipstick in place. Thanks for your help.

And btw...Congrats on winning Modified N/A!!!!

No windage tray? My issue was the same till I attached the windage tray and the dip stick simply slid along the outside of it.
