Drivers side head left of exhaust manifold ,remove that factory sensor "it controls the nearly useless gauge on dash"' and install new one there..
Or there's a plugged off hole on passengers side (allen head plug)head near back, left of manifold .. But it's a pain to get to that one..

The water temp sensor should be on the driver's side. For some reason I can't remember if it's in the block or cylinder head

both heads have a bung...the driverside controls your in car gauge like said above. If it were me id run one from the passenger side head for a remote gauge

In my case I have replaced the 2 wire sensor on the waterpump for a 3 wire sensor.
The 3 wire still send a signal to the ECU and the third wire can make the after market gauge to work.

I have aftermarket gauge hooked up to the sensor on the left side cylinder head and the Factory ( Mazda in my case ) gauge hooked up to the new 3 wire sensor on the waterpump.
