Is this an lt1 or ls1?
Guys, I have a local Md. shop owner, older guy, that says he has a 1998 lt1 for sale that was taken out of a camaro that was totaled. He says its an original lt1 out of the 98 camaro. But it has aluminum heads! I thought 98 was the 1st year for the ls1, which would explain the heads. I haven't googled alot to verify this, but can somebody help me out with this. I went by to inspect the engine but had to leave as soon as I got there which was about 2 weeks ago and can't remember what I saw. He's asking $600.00. $1000.00 for the complete motor and 6 speed tranny. No wire harness or ecu. Thoughts!!! And as soon as possible. I will only have tomorrow to pick it up if I want it as I will be going out of town for a few days. Is this too good to be true ???

LT1 longblock. Note the exhaust ports on the heads.
Ls1 longblock. Again, note the exhaust ports.
easiest way to tell.
'98 was Ls1 though... MAYBE an early 98 could have an lt?
they're VERY different looking engines.
note the shape of the timing cover. On the LT in the picture it's rounded like older SBC motors. The Ls1 it's square on the bottom.
The exhaust ports on LS heads are evenly spaced. On an LT they're 1 23 4 like older SBC motors.
The Ls1 has a "signature" coil on cover design stock. The LT has a coil pack mounted in the front.

Most salvage places don't specialize. To them it's "a v8 gm engine." They could honestly care less. These are the best places to find good deals actually.. they don't know what's valuable so they sell it for average price for other non-coveted values, and you walk away with something nice with less cash out of your pocket.

Sorry man. I didn't have time to take any. For everybody else, I'll be going there tomorrow to verify just what the heck it is. I would hate to b-slap an elderly person for tying to get over on me!!! If it's an ls1, I'll throw him a few more dollars (i'm not that type of guy!) But I really appreciate all the helpful info and pics thus far. All helpfull info. Thanks again!!!

Side note: if it looks like an ls1 but it's iron.. it could be an LQ4/9, or a 5.3 (I dunno the designation for those.) If it's either of those, there is a 6.0 or 4.8/5.3 stamping on the front of the engine.
Ls1 is an aluminum block engine.

Well, based on the fact there is no harness or ECU. It kindof sounds like an unfinished swap... you may be sitting on a gold mine.. Id love to have a 6.0 and T56... Pics would be awesome...

exactly. If the guy doesn't know LS/Lt he doesn't know LQ/Ls. an LQ can look like a "stock motor" pretty easily if you go with an Ls6 intake and don't do any cleaning up.. besides the obvious iron block of course.
I say just go check it out.. worst case you can sell it as parts, or use it to hold open an extremely heavy door.

If there is a distributor, or hole for one in the timing cover then it is a lt1. If it has 8 coils chances are it is a ls1; it could be a moded lt1, but then the ignition parts would be worth nearly $1,000 alone. Check for a plastic intake manifold and differnt exhaust ports also.
