Default hp limit of factory block

whats the hp limit to which an lt1 can stay reliable. just talkin about the block itself. not the pistons or crank or rods. mine is a factory 4 bolt with arp studs and factory mains.

Every LT1 that sets records is a factory block im 99.9% sure

No aftermarket block was made for these think there is a few bowtie blocks but only a handful like 20 or So that should answer the question lol

I would say beyond 600 fwhp I would do a half fill and billet 4 bolt main caps either straight or splayed.

I dont think anyone actually knows the limit yet. They have made over 1000rwhp and survived just fine. Its all in the machining, balance, tune and parts used.

Depends how much time you expect to to handle that power too, the guys making 600+fwhp NA have found bore shadowing and such evidence of undesired movement in cars that see a lot of passes. They sometimes crack the block deck too.

Yes in excess of 1000rwhp has been done, but I don't know how much it was honestly used.

As for a DD type car I dunno. But JakesZ28 has set records and sprayed around a 400shot on his unfilled block and it was just fine

Still no comment on how much use. Is it 20 passes on a 400 shot or 200 passes? Block decked? I have heard of some guys not decking the block on cars that see a LOT of passes because on blocks they did deck they ended up eventually cracking from bolt to bore.

Let's throw out overbore size? And did they sonic check a bunch of blocks to get a thick one or did they just use whatever was laying around?

well i guess i will be investing in some girdles. they cant hurt, right? my car is a daily driver. it making 502 rwhp on a mustang dyno right now. i know i can get more out of it but idk where to stop.

what exactly is bore shadowing?

My stock block was sonic checked, mf'ed and half filled. Ran 30 passes with the 300 shot (824 rwhp) ran 8.97. I have about 30 passes with the 350 shot (870 rwhp) and ran the 8.68. Hit the second stage only twice (guessing close to 1000rwhp) ran 157 mph in 102* heat. I am about to pull the engine to freshen it up because # 8 is down on compression. The cylinders will be checked again to make sure all is good. I will let you guys know what we find.

i am not sure were the edge is. there are a several guys running faster than us with a production block. our block was originally lt1 2 bolt. now it has splayed mains 2,3,4 and a billet front cap. i built this engine about 9 years ago and it has been progressively getting faster ever sense. best pass to date was a less than clean pass at 8.96 and 154 mph. one other thing to keep in mind is the type of power added used. i think the turbo combination would probably make the most power with the best reliability.

I cant really answer that question for you, since I dont own or drive them. I just know that guys have been making pretty big power for a long time now and I havent heard of many block failures. My builder is the same as Z8s and he tells me at 1200hp he wouldnt be to worried about it lasting as long as the tune was correct. Also FI builds these days are a lot easier on parts with much higher HP than we have seen on these motors in the past.
