Other than a loud pop/bang and the motor shutting off while I coasted to the side of the road, nope. At first I thought the motor let go, but I guess the rear locked up for a second killing the motor.

Sad thing is it happened with cruise control set at 80mph in 6th gear.

I find that awfully hard to believe. No noise whatsoever and KAPOW your pinion gear blows up? C'mon...

Oh it was whining to the point where I couldn't talk on the phone for the last few months and it developed a slight grind at low speeds in the last couple weeks. I think I tweaked a pinion tooth and it finally let go.

That looks similar to my 4.10s I had......it was way more than a sound it was more like riding on square wheels!
Girdle or no girdle its gonna happen especially with 4.10s.... Thankfully I built an 8.8 no worries about the rear breaking in that manner again.

Now I just have to decide between throwing in another set of 3.73's that lasted me 8 years or a set of 4.11's. I'm already struggling for traction on the street in 2nd gear with 3.73's so...

That's a trooper of a 10 bolt, 8 years, 387 rwtq, through a 6 speed. It had a good life, now it's time to move up to a 12 bolt/ 60/ 8.8/ 9in.

IIRC you were complaining about your OD gears with normal driving using 3.73's. In your case whatever one is stronger is irrelevant. If they're set up correctly on street tires they'll last forever. If it were my terd I'd go with 4.10's so I could use 5th and maybe even 6th in most cases. If you ever decide to go to the track, even launching softly you may get a better ET/MPH out of it...
