Default Holes in LE3 intake walls and not the same holes where the studs go through.

Since I have put my engine back together with these just bought but used LE3 heads I have been trying to find what I think is a vacuum leak that is causing all my problems. I didn't know if this could be causing my problem. I thought that I heard LE3 heads have this and it's not an issue. Anyhow here is the picture of the hole. I think the other head has one of these in the same spot as well. I'm thinking behind this hole is closed off from any air anyways but just checking if I'm correct. Thanks for looking.

If there is a void it's either a stud for a rocker, head bolt passage, Water passage, or exhaust bolt passage. They can leak air past them. I'd think you would have been able to tell if it was a water passage so I would look to see if any of the others look to be close to that. Thread sealant helps cure some of those. What runner is that and how are we looking at it? Someone here will know what that is.

Looks like a rocker stud hole. Pull out the rocker stud and check it out. Then make sure you put thread sealant on the threads.

The rockers studs are more in the roof, that's probably a bolt hole. My old LE2 heads had a few random holes in them too.

I don't think it is a rocker stud those holes are more toward the top of the intake wall. I do already have thread sealant on the rocker studs though. It's definantly not a water passage. Also I have head studs and if that was it I'd think I'd be sucking in oil through the hole. But you may be onto something with the exhaust bolt passage!

Here is another pic. It's kind of blurry. I'll get another pic later. But if you look far to the top left in the left runner you can see where an actual hole is for the rocker stud which again has sealant. But the right runner is deep inside the runner. Again I think you may be onto something with the exhaust bolt passage.

More than likely a head bolt passage... Start shinning a light around on the head..

Just wondering, how would you fix a problem like this?

My exhuast bolt holes are in the exhaust ports where they start to break through but you should find out what it is and see if you can find a way to seal it up if need be.

I have LE3 heads and mine don't have any holes in the port walls like that, it looks to me like someone did some "additional porting" and over did it. The only way to fix it is epoxy or welding.

That's the head bolt hole. It won't impact performance unless a stress fracture forms. If you look at some large CNC programs it is common to break through there.

Its only the head bolt hole. Nothing to worry about. Its not uncommon to intentionally cut through to gain cross section area there because its right where the floor pinches against the roof of the port. Widening the port out there is normally a good way to gain upper lift flow numbers. I normally install thin brass sleeves to void off any issues with oil getting by the bolt head or if coolant gets by the threads of the head bolt. I dont think you would have any issues with exh bolt passages you speak of being the exh port is on the opposite side of the intake runner.
