LT1 not starting right away
Hi,
I bought a 96 Trans Am WS6 who doesnt start cold or warm one the first attempt. i need always a second attempt except for a few times it starts on the first time. when I turn the key 2 or 3 times to ignition without starting the engine, the car starts earlier or better.
Air leak? Fuel filter? Fuel Pump?
I am going to change the Filter soon.
Fuel Pump work has been done, the metal above the rear axle has an opening what I have detected.
any infos, thanks Greg

Mine does the same thing and is the same model car and year. CHanged the fuel filter and put in a 255 pump and it still does it. Kind of hoping you find something because it is driving me nuts.

your opti is on its way out.... my last lt1 did that **** for a while till it just died in the driveway... it would crank for like 5 seconds before it would run... if it was warm and I killed it, it would crank up quick if I didnt wait more than a minute...

Mine used to do that randomly. It seemed to do it worse with some brands of fuel than with others. It likes Shell. Mine has fresh plugs, wires and opti. It's stored for winter and during a cam change a few weeks ago I found half my intake manifold bolts finger tight. First start after cam change it popped right off.

checking my "not starting on the first attempt " thread again.
last time i had to go and stop the engine a lot. fuel was pretty low and the
car was then very hard to start. i always could hear the fuel pump running though.
when it gets hot outside and lots of driving the car releases gasoline vapor anywhere( just when the gastank is under 1/4 full.) you can smell it in the car quite strong. when i fill up the tank it has vanished!
today i checked the canister and the hoses at the rear driver wheel.
also checked the connections to the fuel pump ( got a cut out at the fuel pump area) no vapors! all hoses are connected and so far in place.
I start the engine and it doesnt start on the first attempt like always.
I unscrew the gascap and the car STARTS RIGHT AWAY!
Does anybody have the same problems. I got no clue where is the error.

I just posted this in another thread where another guy was having the same problem. I had the exact same issue in my 96 TA and this fixed it. It also fixed the same problem in my wifes 01 Impala.
Your hard cold starting issue can be caused by a bad fuel pressure regulator. The diaphram in it starts to leak a little and causes a condition similar to flooding. There should be a small hose going from the nipple on the end of the regulator (rear side of the intake between the fuel rails) to a nipple on the passenger side of the intake toward the rear. Pull that hose. If gas leaks out, or even if it has the smell of gas inside it, the fpr needs to be replaced.
