2.73 rear end gear cars don't have it on the selector but it is there... if you get a shifter plate from a v6 car, or any other with the pattern it will be selectable again.

Takes more than a shifter plate.....you have to remove a pin that is in the shifter.

You have a non performance axle ratio option car aka 2.73s find a 6 speed car for the 3.42rear then get your pcm tuned you will love it.

My car has no 1st gear labeled on the shifter but im able to shift into first, my shifter will go one click under what is labled as second.....which I assume is first. My trans has been rebuilt with all the goodies, shift kit and stall, maybe they took the pin out when they did the rebuild? I have the reciepts for the trans build but it dont mention it anywhere.

They must have removed the plastic stop Its not really a pin but a small square piece of plastic that physically prevents the shifter from going into first. I used a putty knife as a chisel when I removed mine and neatly removed it.

Was a sound level thing back in the day, the test was at like 40 mph or something, and with 2.xxs you can get to 45 in first which was over the Db limit, with the 3xxs you can only go 38 (i think, or slower with better gears) which was below the speed need for the test, and a shift into second made it pass. Was a max Db limit while in the lowest gear select-able test at 40(something)mph.

Welcome to LS1tech!

Some car rental chains would order cars that couldn't be shifted down to first gear. Also, some chain transmission shops such as Aamco would disable shifting down to first gear manually on jobs that they warranty.

I would go with 3.73s not 3.42s unless it's a DD. My 3.23s just are not enough

I stated 3.42 rear due to the fact they sell for cheap and way easier to find...... 3.73s would require being set up etc. Costing 550-600 to have in the car. I would rather have 300.00 in my pocket than to be a tenth or two quicker.....

As stated someone may have removed the mechanism that blocks manual 1st gear these cars are OLD now and many have been modded by now.

No pics but the job is simple.
Remove the shift plate
Move the shifter from park to low gear and watch where the stop is restricted then just pop that plastic piece off at this point you will be able to shift it down 1 more spot that will enable manual 1st gear.

Transmission RPM limiter in the programming? I thought I read that some rigs have a rpm/speed limit trip to prevent over spinning the insides...

im not sure...I would think if it was programing it would do it all the time...but some times it will hold 1st long as I want it, and others it will shift at normal driving rpm...haven't read anywhere that doesn't say just cut the stop off the shifter...but also haven't seen ppl saying it was a 96-97, maybe theyre different bc of obd2?
