Random 3rd gen question
So, once again, the people in this section seem to be more helpful then others. I know it's not LT1, but here's the question anyways:
A friend of mine is working on her dad's 87 Camaro. It's in great shape structurally and cosmetically, but the engine isn't exactly running the hottest. It has the 2.8L V6 and it seems to bog down and not want to idle. Someone has told her that it's the throttle body sucking air past the bushing on the input. Does this sound plausible? If so, is there any way to fix it, or would replacing it be the better option? Her dad wants to keep it as stock and as factory as possible. Does anyone know the factory part number for the proper throttle body for that engine? Thanks!

Fire it up and hit the throttle body with some carb cleaner. Idle will change when she sprays the leak, if there is one. Just tell her to be careful around ignition coils and spark plug wires with the spray, if one is leaky it makes a nice fireball. I'd say hit up the pick a part junkyard for 2.8 v6 throttle body.
Not sure if it has the turd plastic Bosch MAF like the TPI cars but those were always causing driveability problems on 3rd gens as well. Some cars even had a recall that converted them to speed density to get rid of the damned thing. Tap the housing with a screwdriver and see if the engine stumbles. Needs one if so and probably a burnoff relay as well. Don't get that from the junkyard, you want one with a warranty.

Yes the 2.8 has the same shitty MAF that has been known to be a problem. As stated, tap it to see if the engine behaves differently. Those intakes as well have a lot of surface mating area so it is quite possible it may have a vacuum leak. Regardless, those motors will last forever. The one I had I drover from 23K miles to over 200K before I took it out for a different project. The only components replaced were the MAF and waterpump. Didn't use a drop of oil. Gutless, but I got extremely good gas mileage (28 to 32mpg highway/5spd).

Just to clear something up, what I mean by "a lot of surface mating area" is the intake has an upper and lower half so definitely spray around that area with starter fluid or equivalent...
Wouldn't be a bad idea to check the torque on the bolts that fastenes the two intake halves together.
