Default Stall Question

Ok so I brought my car in July of last year and the day I put my tags on it the tranny went up on me. I took for a rebuild (3rd and 4th were done) and they rebuilt it with "heavy duty parts". I asked the guy was it a aftermarket stall in there before he started the rebuild,(the guy I brought it from told me it was a 3200 stall with 3.42s and shift kit) the mechanic says no it was a stock stall but I can throw in a 3000 stall in for $200 bringing me to a grand total of $1700,now my question is how can I tell if he pissed on my head and told me it was raining?

I asked for all the old hard parts from the messed up 1,no stall was in it but I still have warranty papers and its still under a year

You couldn't tell by how it drove before? I know even my tight performabuilt 3200 was easily noticeable at any amount of throttle.

That's the thing I never really got a chance to get into it,the day I tagged it I took it on the highway,1 full throttle run then the 3rd and 4th gear pretty much was finished so I don't even remember the feel of it.

Hmm, really no way to tell then unless you can get your hands on the one he took out. Then who's to say that really is the one he took out. Also for 200 bucks, I'm sorry to say but it's not a quality converter that he put in.

That's what I'm thinking, I've priced stalls and they are no where near that price. Is there a technique to find out?

$200 for a 3000 stall..... You don't want a POS like that in your car! I wouldn't trust him to touch any of my stuff.
He's either clueless or dishonest, or a little of both.
He could be taking advantage of your unfamiliarity with what's in the car and be selling a 3200 converter to someone else for double that amount. ???

@Bowtienut thats exactly what I'm thinking. I really think he took advantage of my lack of knowledge because I knew absolutely nothing about any of this,I'm still learning.

Not outside the realm of possibility. This happens more often than most people think!

Yea that thought also crossed my mine too...I guess I have to chuck that up as a loss, but my main concern is that I read on another thread that you need a tune for having a stall in your car,I'm not even sure if I have 1 or not and if so which size stall it is...

Here's how you know if you need a the program fix for a high stall converter:
Go to the strip with sticky tires; if after coming out of the hole on a dead hook, it fails to shift to 2nd gear under WOT, you need the "stall wall" fix in your program. If it shifts fine, no need to do anything.
I saw the issue on mine when I changed from a Yank 3000 converter to an Edge 3400 converter (the Edge flashed to 3600).
If you're never going to run slicks or DR's at the track, you won't see the issue.
