Is the motor miss firing at idle? U may have a plug wire arcing. Check it at night in the dark its pretty easy to see if it is arcing somewhere.

I had something similiar going on and a new MAP sensor cured it. If its not a 93 you can also unplug the MAF sensor to see if it runs different.

I noticed arcing on mine same method. It has to be super dark to notice though. Start it up and rev it. While revving, just look around and see if you see any flashing.

Is there a certain RPM where you start losing power or does it start hesitating as soon as you try to accelerate? I know you said "like" a backfire, but has it backfired while doing this?

Does it have an SES light on? Like posted above does it actually backfire? Does it do it 100% of the time or just when hot/cold? I had an accelerating backfiring problem and it turned out to be a bad ICM. Can you maybe get a video of the problem?

So what is the deal with your problem? Ask for help and no follow ups! Did you get the problem fixed?

From the limited information it sounds like its popping through the throttle body...possibly from an extreme lean condition. Has the fuel filter ever been changed?
