Default AFR 195's... worth it?

Hey guys... Compiling a list of things for my 97 SS while i have the motor sent off and vat'd, rebuilt... Came across these AFR's that are poted, polished, port matched to the intake... Local friend is wanting $1200 for both heads/intake.

Already have the Kooks,LT4 Hotcam, 1.6 rr.... I know the AFR 220's and 225's are great heads for the LS1/6 crowd... How are these 195's...? Good deal? Would you do it?

Considering you told us absolutely nothing about the heads we have no idea. If they are decently ported with fresh springs/guides/vj, then they probably are, but if they are in need of a full rebuild and new springs and the port work is **** then no.

They're way better than stock heads although I'd put in something bigger than a hot cam. Are you building a stocker or a stroker, but otherwise good looking parts list so far.

Id ****** those heads up in a heartbeat, the port work looks good. As for a cam, youll need something much bigger than a hotcam.

Let me be CLEAR....
The heads are FRESHLY ported and polished, new valve seals, seats, NEW Dual springs, guides all of the goodies by LOYD ELLIOT along with a PORT MATCHED INTAKE.

I am building a stocker w some decent non forged Mahle pistons or the like. Sending block off to be vatted, honed, ec.. NOT looking to Stroke. I know of the aruments regarding the Hot cam... I am not looking to be the fastest LT1 out there.. that is what my Z06 is for. I would like a dependable decent running 17 y/o LT1 SS.... Will also be adding a Yank 32-3600 Tq converter like the one in my 00 Firehawk.

The Hot Cam will be sufficient for what i am doing... As i have a pretty bad *** tuner, he'll squeeze every bit of power out of it that he can (safely).

Thanks for the replies... Much appreciated. Talked the guy down to $1200 cash. Picking these up next week.

The heads will be begging for more cam. The hotcam is an excellent cam for stock heads and has a proven track record in those applications. Go a little bigger!

1200 for the heads and intake are a very nice deal. I would not use the hotcam. Do they have the papers that they came with from LE?

Top, if you pass on these, please let me know. As you know, I need new heads as well. If you pick them up and have leads on a similar set up, please also let me know. Looks like your SS is coming along nicely!

I think you will be happy with the hotcam, as it will make it a nice little street car, but you will be leaving about 50hp on the table, and not making up for any more driveability. If you are setting up a fresh bottom end, use ARP hardware all around, and put in something bigger from either LE or AI or TEA. If you use the hotcam, it will just be another slow head/cam LT1 and is why the LT platform gets such a bad rep. You will be around 350rwhp, if you pick a custom/bigger cam, you could be well north of 400.

Just my $0.02

The guy i know actually has an additional set of ported LT1 heads... These guys are SPEED guy's and run a shop in the North Texas Area.

My guy worked as a builder, tuner @ LG Motorsports for 9 years. He knows his stuff... I'll check on those heads for you Sir... Get pic's, specs, etc...

Good ported heads, good tune, good exhaust on a LT4 hotcam will yield about 360 to 380rwhp. Probably looking at very low 12's, maybe high 11's in good weather with the proper gearing.

Pro-filer 23* SBC Heads convert to reverse cooling 1300 bucks.
Flow isn't everything but flows 300 as cast.
CNC'd can flow over 400.
All for 1300 bucks.

Opens up lots of intake manifolds also.
