Default LT1, heater core flushed and still no heat.

I'm sure a bunch of you have seen my opti thread, well today I got the system filled and bled. I idled the car for around an hour and the temp settled at about 170-180* (I have a 160* t-stat), I had the heat set to max with the fan on high while bleeding it.

The air is barely lukewarm though, what else could it be? I blasted the lines with a garden hose until I got water coming out of the opposite line- what gives?

Also my car idles at about 850-900, any common areas for vacuum leaks/ a good way to test? I think I read that stock should be 650, then again the po had a pcmsforless tune in so who knows what its set at.

Thanks.

180 degrees may not be warm enough. Remember these cars have were designed to run at 220 degrees. My car has the same problem. It runs at 170-180 and the heat is only lukewarm.

I just got back from a shakedown with 25 hard miles on her, temps dipped down to about 40/ high 30s and the air was straight up cold.

Personally I've never seen the sense of running a 160* t-stat, isn't the car burning more gas than it should?

Thanks gents

PS- Today was my first time driving in under 45* temps and with bald Sumi's in the rear, WOW what a wild ride.

On my 97 AFTER I replaced the heater core with a brand new one I had normal, hot heat from my vents. That was with a 160 stat and tune for it. I think these old heater cores are fairly clogged and people like to say its the tstat.
Just my experience with one of my fbodys.

Also OP when I did the flush on mine I had heat for a day then it faded again. Core was to far gone and that'd be my guess with yours as well.

Did you flush it both ways? Might not help if the core has many passages clogged, but it should be done both ways to make sure you did all you could. Also, did you flush the hoses and not just the core at the firewall?

My car has a 160* t-stat and correct tuning for it. It can sit and idle all day long when the outside temps are 40's and bellow and only put out sort of warm air. Need to drive it around some for it to get any real heat going. Even then if you stop and idle for a while it will cool back off. FWIW, I flushed my heater core when I had the motor out. No idea how the heat was before as I pulled the motor after putting maybe 2 miles on it.

Also no idea how old that heater core is? Kinda supports my argument they're all just mildly clogged.

I tried searching shoebox's site for "core", because I'm smart like that, and found this.

1993-2002 heater core
AC-Delco # 15-60051 52468039

Looks like the gm part number is 52468039

Is it difficult to replace the heater core in these cars? I just replaced the heater core in my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it was a bit of a job. The dash had to come out to get to the HVAC assembly, which also had to be removed, disassembled etc.

Dash doesn't have to come out on the fbody luckily. If I can do it you all canl just the glove box assembly has to come apart.

Google advancedautopart coupons. I found one for 30% off when I got my heater core. And my heat worked fine with my old and new heater core when it was 30 out.

Yes I flushed both ways through the hoses, I guess its my core then. At this point I don't care since the car is running well, I'll deal with it for the next 2 months or so. Next year I'll definitely replace it, good to hear the dash doesn't have to come out.. I know on some cars its a real nightmare.
