Lt1 ram air vs cold air!!!
I have a 97 Camaro ss! It has built 355 ported n polished heads cc306 cam and a monster built 4l60e with 2500 stall. My predicament I'm in is whether r not I should remove my ram air n put a cold air intake on. N will a strut tower brace bolt up with the ss ram air still on there. I've done searches but all I come up with is ws6 stuff and there ram air is different from ours. Also can I switch to an ls1 lid without changing the hood and all that other stuff and it still be functional? It is an ss n I'd rather not do that I like the lt1 body style camaro's better than the ls1's! I don't like the catfish look lol. Any help would be great thanks!

ram air is a cold air intake system in it's self. ram air is speed induced air compressing on the leading edge of an object. with an inlet placed in the correct area, the compressed air that flows over, under and round is forced into the air inlet. the ram air effect, air starts compressing at about 60-70mph, also the aerodynamic wall. that's why MPG's is better best at about 55-65. I say keep the hood you have

O I was gonna do that I don't wanna get rid of my hood I like it I hate those ws6 style hoods for Camaro! Really any other hood besides a cowl. I wanna keep it original as possible on the outside. I just wanna know if I should get rid of my filter that sits on top of my intake n get a regular cold air instead r would it be more beneficiary to keep it ram air?

N I didn't know the ss setup was actually restrictive. If its true that it is robbing me of hp then I should change it. I thought it was helping! So now my question would be get an ls1 lid r a CAI setup?

Honestly I don't think it's anything significant to even worry about... Your "butt" dyno wouldn't even know if you did change it.

Lol but dyno!!! This might be a stupid question but just how is the ss ram air restrictive? It seems to me that it would be the opposite since its testing air directly forced inside.

The SS hood has two 90-degree sharp bends in it (which is restrictive and turbulent), plus it sits on top of the engine. Many people see higher IATs with the SS intake as well.

It's mostly because it has to go through quite a few turns before it hit's the throttle body. Pretty much a "U" shape. That slows down the speed of air coming in but I still don't think it's that big of a deal on a bolt-on or mildly upgraded LT1. There's also a baffel in the scoop to prevent water from going in that's kind of a hinderance. The WS6 hood has it too. It's still and improvement over the Z28, Base Formula, and Base Trans Am intake.

Because with the hood scoop entry being so low on the hood the air velocity at the level of the hood is significantly slower than higher up off of the hood (Google "boundary layer"). At the level of the hood the air velocity is actually ZERO. Velocity proportionally increases the further off of the hood you go but the inlet for the hood is well below the free stream. Coincidentally for this reason, this is why you see many high HP drag cars with the hood scoop 12-18" above the hood.

Yea he did thanks I understand it a little better now. But this raises another question if they r that restrictive why do ss's have more hp from the factory than z28's! R ws6's more than trans am's? I know there is like a 10 hp difference between them on ls1 cars but idk if it is the same for lt1's r not. N which would be more beneficiary to me? A regular CAI r the ls1 lid?

Tearing all the baffles out of a WS6 hood, putting weather stripping around the hood ports and putting in a Volant would make it more of a "Ram Air" since there is nowhere else for the air to go, that is what I did and my mind is telling me I've gained 50rwhp while my car is telling me "dream on loser"
