Not sure if they were produced by Mahle (someone with vastly more knowledge will probably chime in), but it could have been a rebuild.

I'm pretty sure the LT1 pistons were Mahles, I know the early ones were for sure. A friend of mine had a stock LT1 out of a '93 he torn down recently and they were Mahles, engraved right on the side of the piston.

Because that is who they chose for the supplier. Why is it a head scratcher?

Because in this particular case, many people, myself included, weren't aware that Mahle is a big OEM supplier. Most of us know of them due to their involvement in the high performance aftermarket, where cost is no object, and we also know that the GM "bean counters" usually keep a pretty tight grip on the purse strings. Therefore the surprise to find Mahle pistons in a high volume GM engine.

Pretty sure Mahle is the largest piston manufacturer in the world and provides the original pistons for a LOT of engines not just the LT1 and done so for a long time. Been common knowledge for a couple decades.

Didn't you say "Wonder why they did that"? That's head scratching.

Gee, I thought what 96capricemgr said below. My question is why does everyone on this site have such a short fuse?

understanding the business end of it all GM contacted various piston manufacturers and accepted bids and proposals from all of them. GM wanted a durable, lightweight piston with tight tolerences to handle the higher rpm Lt1 and Mahle gave the best deal its not like they are Forged racing pistons.
