How much are the scrap yards wanting for a 12 bolt? Surely can't be that expensive? I understand about budget or lack there of. But I wouldn't think that a 12 bolt could be that expensive? I might be wrong?

well if someone makes a 8.8 bolt in I would think it would be cheaper than both 12 and 9 inch ... plus they say that the 8.8 is just as good as a 12 bolt. How much do people spend on converting a 8.8?

If you're not an experienced fabricator about halfway through the build you're going to wish you just spent the extra $1000 on a pre-fab proven unit. Your story is not uncommon - most people don't want to spend $2000 on a chunk of iron.
Fact is eventually you're going to pay for it - one way or another.

If you play your cards right, you can get an 8.8 dropped in fairly cheap since 8.8's are a dime a dozen. I'd still take a Ford 9", though.. just the ease in gear swapping is worth it, IMO.

You can find cheap(er) alternatives locally, you just need to be proactive and look for them and/or know the right people to talk to.
