on the right passenger side my catalytic converter is fuming red hot all the way back to the y-pipes . what could be wrong with it because my check engine light is on.

You have a misfire on that bank.
The O2 sensor is reading the un-used oxygen as a lean condition, dumping more fuel, and all that excess fuel is burning in the exhaust. Thus, the red glow.
Check/replace plugs and wires on that bank.
