Default s60 rear end??

I have a 97 z28. When I bought it, the guy was selling for his son, and didn't know much about it. When I asked about mods he said "transmission and rear end work" and that was the extent of his knowledge. After looking at it the car also had a hotcam, shorties, vig stall, and 3.73 gears. Anyways, when I changed to c5 z06 wheels, I noticed the ends of the axles had "Strange s/t" on them. Now the guy said "rear end work" so I'm wondering if it's just the s/t 35 spline axles or I have an entire s60 rear. Are there any numbers, markings, or any other ways I can tell if it is in fact a s60?

It's most likely just the upgraded axles for the 10 bolt. Which isn't a bad thing at least. My S60 just has the "S" symbol on the axel ends. Pics would help but the S60 should be noticebly larger than a 10 bolt. An S60 has 3" axel tubes and 9.75" ring gear. Should also have a drain plug on the bottom of the center section. Those are the only things I can think of at the moment. They are well built and look factory to the untrained eye which I really love about mine.

Google for some pics and info on the Dana 60 and you'll see how to identify it. The 7.5 10 bolt was initially designed for the mid '70s Monza, the Dana 60 came stock on stick shift 440 and 426 Chrysler muscle cars and 3/4 ton trucks. If you're lucky you picked one up with the car, but as 93m6formy said above, probably just Strange axles.

I'll have to look when I get home from work this weekend. Honestly I haven't really ever paid attention to it since I noticed the axles, so I haven't noticed any differences or anything, just got to thinking about it the other day and was curious!

It also has a different differential cover on it with the brand name on it, I think its something like LPW or something close to that. I can't remember, haven't even seen the car in about 4 months because of work!

I wouldn't count on it. An s60 on a cam auto car is complete overkill. Nobody will drop a few grand on a built to order rear and not mention it. Even if they guy didn't know much about the car, something like that is extremely important.

This is what a S6 rear looks like. Very distinguishable by the rear cover:

LPW makes a reinforced cover for the 10-bolt, which is probably what you have.

you could put a 10 bolt inside an s60......the dana is a MONSTER piece, let alone virtually indestructible, I love mine
