94 formula optispark question
so i just bought a 94 formula a4 car. about to tear it down and replace the opti. i heard somewhere that you have to remove the opti's cap first and mark where the rotor is. is this true? or can you just simply remove the old opti and index with the new opti drive shaft with the cam gear and acheive the proper timing?

Ok cool. Can the shaft be pulled out and placed in the cam hear to set correct position.? Any tips? The msd website was saying to remove the cap and do something to the rotor. Never heard of anyone doing that. Thanks.

Are you talking about a "regular" opti or a MSD? The MSD opti driveshaft spins MUCH more freely to the point it's practically impossible to get it in the hole lined up without it moving around out of position (ask how I know)...that's why they recommend taking the cap off to hold the rotor/driveshaft still. Regular optis the driveshaft stays put for the most place and after a few tries you should be able to line it up and it goes right in.

Best way to to line it up is say put the "keyed" part of the spline at 12 o clock on the cam sprocket and then clock the opti the same way. Ive done it with the cap on the rotor and with it off. Off is a tad easier

Lol I'm doing one now and didn't know this does the gear only slide in one way? Mine took a while to get in but it went in JUST PUT IT IN TODAY DIDN'T FINISH THE JOB YET. Do I need to pull this back apart?
