Default Water pump question

There is a sleeve that goes over the water pump drive shaft, does it matter which way it goes? I slid it off and didn't pay attention,

It shouldn't matter; the spline drive is the same on both ends.

The end with the groove goes toward the engine block.

Heh, oops. I guess I didn't notice that when I swapped my pump last week, and just got lucky. I'll go back to my corner now.

I think it's more important to grease the splines and use the o-rings to keep the lube in the coupling. IMO Moly grease is the best choice.

SO, is the coupler even able to be installed with the groove facing the pump? If so, what is the consequence of installing it backwards?

Most water pumps and also the felpro timing cover gasket set come with 2 o-rings for the water pump drive coupler. The o-rings fit in the groove begind the spline section of the drives on the engine and water pump. In a pinch you can measure the O.D. of the drive groove and the I.D. of the unsplined part of the coupling and get a 0-ring that is alittle bigger than the difference of the two measurements. The dealer could probably get the o-rings if you can't find any. I've got the o-ring dimensions at home, I could post them up later.

Found another thread that somebody said the o-rings are felpro p/n 407. I can't confirm this right now though.

I have never seen the "WP" actually come with the "O" rings, maybe some do. The FelPro TC kit has them...along with the WP gaskets and seals should you need those also

The o-rings are what keep the splines clean. Grease in and dirt out. #156 in the pic link I gave in post #3. They go in a groove near the end of each splined shaft (came from the factory that way). They often get real flat or crumble away.

From my post #9, Part Numbers and dimensions for WP drive coupling o-rings if you don't want to use GM parts for whatever reason.

Felpro o-rings as listed on the contents of the timing cover gasket set TCS 45953. 2 ea. p/n 407. Looks like 50 cents ea at most auto parts stores.

I used Aircraft o-rings, p/n M83248/1-012. .375 id, .500 od, .062 wall.
Available from many places, below is just a example:

You mean the two bottom w/p bolts? You don't need to pull anything apart if that's the case. Just take one bolt out at a time, put sealant on threads and torque to spec. Two bottom bolts are the only ones that need sealant.

Don't sweat it. Gaskets only cost a couple dollars for the pair. Think of how much you're saving doing it yourself vs. taking it to a shop. Everyone has to start learning somewhere.
