Thoughts and opinions on this 383 short block
Guys it is as simple as I need a motor for my 97 z28. I have no idea if I am going to fix it than sale it or what. Anyway I found this 383 short block about a 1 hr away from me. Here are the specs. The price is 1,500.
"New 383 LT1 Shortblock professionally assembled, 0 miles, never ran. Camshaft installed and degreed in with Comp R hydraulic lifters installed. All you will need to complete engine is a decent set of heads, pushrods, rocker arms, and an intake. Should produce 400-500 WHP through a t56 transmission depending on heads and tune. "

Good buy? Would stock heads and intake work on this short block? I know ported heads, intake will give it a lot more HP, but at this point I want something to drive. I will worry about that later if I keep the car.

Speculating about a HP range from reasonable to pipedream without the most important part HEADS.
from the few details many hallmarks of a completely retarded build. Ask what pistons and crank it has.
Any rotating assembly worth running would have cost more than $1500 so there is a good chance this has a $800cast assembly that is a giant leap backwards from stock.
I would go with a junkyard engine before tossing those dice.

$1500 for a machined 383 shortblock? Could be a good buy. Is this from a builder, machine shop, or Craigslist?
The problem is the crank is probably cast eagle, if that rotating assembly is forged, jump on it!

It could also, most likely, be cheap Cast crap. LOL
