Default New cam came with short dowel... anyone know how to pull the dowels out of cams?

"I love my build", "I love my build","I love my build","I love my build","I love my build"... .

Finally got a day to get back at it, got the gasket kits, lubed up the LE spec'd cam and slid her on in and "**** ME!", if the new cam doesn't have the short pin in it.

Anyone have a solid way to pull the pins out and get the long one from the old cam into the new one? Otherwise, I'm thinkin' machine shop tomorrow. But if I can do it without destroying anything I'd like to get it done today.

Got a slide hammer with a chuck that will grip the pin?

No sir... And I'd be lying if I said that I even know what that is.

Edit: Just googled it... and No... Definitely not.

Go the the machineshop and let them pull it out with their slid hammer. The cam was likely dropped on end in shipping driving the pin deep.

Could also be for the earlier Opti Spark design, the un-vented units, those had shorter cam dowel lengths.

Best method is to cut it. Use a cut-off wheel and dress it up with a file. Measure twice (or even more) and cut once as they say.

When you put the new one in, duct tape the front journal and wrap the edge so if the hammer actually grazes off the pin, it won't damage the journal.

I used a pair of vise grips and a hammer, put them on it sideways and lightly tap it out. Then install new pin. Or if you have a slide hammer use that.

Couple of you seem to think he wants the pin in farther, not the case.

Machineshops will have a slide hammer used for pulling things like deck pins, that is the cleanest method to pull the pin back out farther.

A friend received a cam that the box showed obvious evidence of having been dropped on end crushing the styrofoam, pin was DEEP but the local machineshop took all of 5minutes and a thank you to resolve it.

Ok he says "new cam doesnt have the short pin in it." Then says "get the long one from the old cam into the new one?" So you are right, he wants the longer pin. Fooled me as '95 was transition year. '92-'95 was cam w/short pin shalow hole. And '95-'97 was cam w/long pin and deeper hole.

In that case isnt the pin a friction fit in a through hole? I dont have time to dig my old '94 cam out but i believe u can push the pin out from the back side with a punch - very strong punch?

...
AFAIK there was no transition year. 92-94 short pin, 95-97 long pin. Same as the opti.
