Default Top Speed of a Firebird Trans Am

My car tops out at 115. I need to know what type of mail order tune do I need to take off the governor or whatever I have to do to go pass 115. I thought of going to PCM for less, but I wanna know thoughts and opinions on what route to take. '96 Trans Am A4 not the Z rated package either.

Get z rated tires and tune and you should be able to top out at about 145-150mph

I agree. The "governor" was part of the computer program, for cars that didn't get the 245/50/16 "Z" rated tires.

I can't believe people actually opted for that option.

You mean the "option" of a speed limiter? IIRC, the speed rated tires were something like $250 extra, so in a price driven market GM opted to put cheaper tires on the cars as "standard equipment", and the "T" rated tires, to avoid the potential lawsuits.

Of course, that makes me roll on the floor laughing, as my first brand-new car was a Chevelle SS, with the 454 engine. That thing topped out around 140.....and came with non speed rated Goodyear Polyglas GTs......

If the car is stock and there is no tune in it you could just put the computer out of another F-body in it which does not have the speed limiter. As far as I know no Firebird T/A’s or Formula’s have the limiter. Some Camaro’s especially the convertibles, have the speed limited. That would be the cheapest and easiest solution. Computers with the stock tune are even available at some of the big box auto parts stores. Best choice is a tune, especially if you have some bolt ons, headers, etc or want to install a cam.

Note, the tune is the only thing keeping your car from doing that speed. I’m not 100% sure why though, do you live in Germany or Wyoming?
