Torsen Rearend Whining?
I always had a problem with my 97 SS having a whining sound under light throttle and acceleration, it goes away once you accelerate into it harder and put it under load, but on the highway in 6th gear cruising, its screaming.
I'm not too familiar with the torsen differential in this car, so any suggestions or help would be appreciated.
Car: 1997 Camaro SS 6-speed, just over 100k miles

Its a 7.5" 10 bolt, they are made of glass, its on its last leg if its whining. Start searching craigslist for another used 10 bolt with 3.42s, and before you drop cash, open the cover and inspect the gears. You can try changing the fluid in yours to see if it helps, but its probably done.

Agreed. How long have yo had the car? Has it been regeared? If it has been setting the ring and pinion up properly may help if they are decent gears. If not, well then yes at some point she's gonna 'splode. Might be tomorrow, might be 10 years from now depending upon use.
Nice looking car btw. That's my favorite LT1 setup.

Could be the backlash/too much slack in the pinion gear. I don't know who to recommend check it since I have no faith in most shops anymore. There are how to's if you are up to checking it yourself.

Agree it's not the Torsen diff; it's the gears themselves, their setup, or a bearing.
If this is factory original setup, and "on the highway in 6th gear cruising, its screaming", I'd suspect a pinion bearing is on its way out.
If the gears were messed with since factory, I'd suspect the gears/setup and wouldn't worry about it.
I bought a 3rd Gen with 3.73's/Torsen, was always noisy. Had it gone through by the pro that does all my gears. Everything looked good except just slightly high on the backlash. He corrected that, with a good pattern, and it still howls the same as before. It's had about 100 1.6x and 1.7x launches since then and nothing has changed. I'm not worried about it.

I've had the car for about 2 years now and it's been sitting most of that time as I found out the center cam bearing spun badly. After I finish up the rebuild I'll have to pop the cover and check the ring and pinion, and bearings. It's all stock and untouched so well see...
