Default Milling LT1 Heads

How much can you safely mill off of the stock LT1 heads with stock valves before you need to worry about the intake valve seat? .010? .015? I want to take some material off, but do not want to worry about the valve seat.

I have heard you don't want to mill the LT1 head any more than you have to in order to clean it up. Maybe .005 or so, the chamber is already 54cc. Changing the head gasket to .026 or .029 will change the compression.

The LT1 head can be milled fairly heavily, but as stated there is room for compression improvement in gasket alone. Stock aluminum head gasket was .049, as said .026-.029 are readily available.

I had one set of heads milled .032 with bigger valves and porting, stock seats. The porter did it after porting though and had the intake so he could get it all aligned.
Be aware heavy milling might make a porting service less willing to work on them later.

Alright thank you for the input! When the heads go on, thinner head gaskets will go on, but was wondering about milling the heads as well

We have a set of heads from Lloyd Elliott that were milled .020 and fully ported and we'rd running the .026 gasket with no problems. Car runs great.

You can mill it 0.010 or 0.020 no issue, it will add compression, and along with a 0.026 head gasket you can get it way up there. I think 0.010 and an 0.026 gasket on a stock longblock gives like 11.5:1, which is a good number for an aftermarket cam. I dont know what you are worried about with the intake valve seat though, thats not where you will hit an issue, its more that your intake manifold wont be aligned very well anymore unless you get that milled too.

You will start cutting into the stock valve job seating angle @ around .045". Intake manifold alignment will also become at issue somewhere after .040".
