Default 1996 camaro intermediate shaft

Hi I was wondering where I can get a new steering shaft (intermediate shaft) for my 1996 lt1 camaro. The u-joints in my stock shaft are shot but the tag joint looks good. So does any one know where I can get a new one I don't really want used. So I guess does any one know how and where to replace and get the u joint from. Thanks

You can do a LS shaft upgrade and ditch the rag joint as well.

I saw about the ls1 shaf but would rather just do a bolt in shaft. I don't want to cut and eel the ls1 shaft

GM parts direct has something called the steering column "upper shaft" under part #26072258 for $140. I think thats what u are asking. They show a "lower shaft" #26019937 and an entire "shaft assembly" #26019936 but dont have those in stock. U need to open the "catalog" section of the w/p and look through the diagrams for your car.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem that you had and just did the
ls1 steering upgrade. I could get another shaft and do the mods for you so its just a drop in?

The welding on that shaft is over kill, all you need is a hammer and punch, takes 5 minutes.

Its just for my peace of mind, but it really didn't have to be welded all around.

Not sure how thats for peace of mind, if anything that makes getting in a head on wreck worse since it can't collapse now, using a punch and hammer to push the flares in, re-clock it and flare the ends back out and it will still work like it is supposed to is more of a peace of mind.

There's no such a thing when you're talking about steering components.

I just swapped a whole LS1 rack in, you can pull one at a pick n pull from a V6 98-02 for cheap. Try to grab the front spindles, calipers and rotors while your there for the better and bigger 2 piston setup.

Have you done the shaft swap?

I have, but I needed a new steering rack too so I just went with a 98-02 rack. Just saying if you have the option to make something stronger, why not do it? Within reason and budget of course.

Because welding it like that is more of a hazard due to it not being able to collapse like I stated before, you have to hammer it off and on and then flare the ends, it has no room to move either way, so your comment has really nothing to stand on except optimism.

Whoops, missed that, and a fair enough point. Didn't really think about that aspect. Of course, I wouldn't because I'm infallible and would never wreck, duh.
