4" muffler options
I'm going to a Mufflex 4" catback setup this year but do not want to run the muffler that I have (4" in, single 4" out). I have a T/A rear bumper with the 2 tailpipe "notches" and cannot stand the look of them not filled.
I want to run a single 4" in, dual 3" out muffler. Who has a setup like this, and what do you recommend for a nicely toned muffler? I know I'm going to be loud with a high revving 396ci and a big cam. Just trying to tone it down from my true dual dynomax bullet setup.

Thanks SNM but I'm going to run the true rear exit like it is supposed to be. There are a few muffler options out there. Just curious if anyone has experience with any single 4" in, dual x" out mufflers.
Getting it out from under the car will help.
My true dual setup dumps under the car, before the axle, and its ignorant loud with the reverberation off the ground. Driving with the windows up is like putting your head in a bass drum. I'm fully aware that a built 396 with LTs, no cats, and 4" intermediate pipe is going to be loud, just trying to make it bearable. I'll open the 4"cutout when I want to scare the kids

Similar I guess. Not a big fan of those in particular as they appear to be oval. Not sure if I'm going to go with round or dual tips (corsa-like). Regardless of the tip selection, yes the exhaust will come to the back of the bumper like the pic above (as it should be).
edit: after searching some google images and looking at them straight from the rear, the oval tips aren't bad if they're sized right.

heh, would you believe that car doesn't have exhaust come out of those tips?
He has a big 4 inch muffler tucked up like stock location and dumped, tips are fake. Thats what I was trying to get across. I think you will have a hard time finding the muffler config you want in the size you want.

I'm not aware of anybody making a 4"in/3" dual out with a outlet on both ends of the muffler, except for the Spintech, Sportsman SplitCase 364SC, which is pricy at $170 in aluminized steel, an $300 in stainless steel. Furthermore it doesn't flow as good as a Magnaflow #12594 will. The only down side with the Magnaflow #12594 is that both outlets are on the same end so you would need to run a tight 180* mandrel on the outlet the furthest back over to the passenger side then into a 90* mandrel bend then into a straight pile that lined up with the bumper exhaust tip cut out. The driver side tail pipe just need a 90* mandrel bend into a straight pipe that's lined up with the bumper exhaust tip cut out.

Mufflex has a kit that may be what you are looking for. Single 4" to dual 3.5s. Not sure if you have seen it. I do not know how well the muffler flows so I would call Mufflex for the part number and check with Spintech. Perhaps the setup would be plenty for your NA 396.

I went with the single 4" with magnaflow muffler for the most flow possible. Tips are fake as Shownomercy posted (my car).

Could always run a 4" bullet in the I pipe and use a 4" to double 3" adapter to run two tailpipes. I did something like this to make a 2 on the right look, well I mounted the 4" bullet in the rear of the car.
Looking at the pictures you can see the 4" to dual 3" piece I am talking about, I had it welded into the bullet directly, I used to have a dumped under the car 4" setup. It isn't a large piece like the flowmaster 3" to 4" merge piece I have at the front of the car......
But what I'm saying is you can leave the 4" bullet in the I pipe and out back mount that 4" to 3" piece, have plenty of room to get the other pipe to the driver side.

A 4" in/out bullet muffler in the I-pipe location will do very little to muffle the exhaust, and it's only slightly better with 3.5" in/out bullet muffler. That's why I don't even recommend bothering with a bullet muffler in the I-pipe, IF you're trying to noticeably quiet down the exhaust. If you like it really loud with only a slight tone change then go with the bullet muffler in the I-pipe location, you'll like it! Otherwise stick with a oval rear mounted muffler, or if you modify/remove the passenger side seat hump a oval muffler in that location.

I made my own custom dual 3" to single 4" back to dual 3" SS exhaust using Magnaflow bullet mufflers and spintech tips. I finally started the car for the 1st time on Saturday and it sounds MEAN!!!
There are more pics of the exhaust system off the car in this link, just have to scroll through the pics...
