Grinding sound when cranking
So I made a post a month or two back about this Formula 1994 that I bought for 500 bucks. 2 weeks ago it was cranking and was trying to start and run on ether, but was obviously not getting gas. I went ahead and replaced the fuel injectors today because the car had been sitting for about 4.5 years. I thought this would certainly get it to start, but now when I try to start it, it makes this horrendous grinding sound. It almost sounds like the starter or something g mechanical internally.
I have a few questions. Is there any way the timing could be completely off and make this sound? I was told the last owner's son in law replaced the timing chain. I looked at the old one that was still in the trunk and it looks like it can only bolt on one way. Also, the Opti spark went on only one way. So is it even possible to **** up in regards to the timing?
Also, when I tried to crank it, my brother pointed out that the dip stick starts freaking the f out and wobbling/shaking around. Could there be part of the engine hitting the end of the dip stick? Like the crank maybe?
And lastly, I had the starter tested and they said it worked perfectly. I had thought that maybe the think wasn't engaging all the way and grinding. But that seems impossible if the thing tests ok. Any thoughts?

Well the belt is not on it, because the water pump and balancer are off the car. But it sounds like the engine is spinning (it's shaking like it is, unless that's the starter or something grinding).
I'm basically just trying to verify it starts up for a second before I go to all the work of putting the water pump and crap back in. That's the easy part. I just can't seem to get the car to start.
