Mallory 685 is pretty sweet. However they are hard to find and they don't make them anymore. buddy bought a MSD digital 6 plus and it works good. Not as many features but still a 2 step and timing retard. MSD also makes a 2 step box but ive never used one. it uses the old MSD pills

If your just looking for launch control, I used MSD's stand alone soft touch rev limiter and got an adjustable chip. Made an extension harness for the chip with a micro relay on one of the legs. The relay was activated by the cruise control clutch switch.

Word of caution though if you are still running cats, any spark cut out device can shorten their lifespan.

I use an MSD 6AL with their 2 step and a dial to adjust launch rpm's. I'm switching to coil on plug this winter so it's all for sale if your interested.

I didn't think it would be necessary to run and 6AL, is the entire box needed? I thought I could just wire in a 2 step module with a signal switch?

The 2 step module has no limiter circuitry, its basically just a switch to toggle between two different rpm chips. You would need a stand alone limiter such as the MSD 8728 I mentioned above or an ignition box with a chip port. If using an ignition box just get one with a built in 2 step.

So you're thinking and entire box is the best way to go?
How do you go about integrating that into the computer?

I didn't know that, learn something every day.
as far as wiring an ignition box in, MSd makes an adapter that goes between the Coil and the coil plug. Everything is done by the box controlling the coil. As far as the 2 step activation if you are a 6 speed you can go off the cruise switch like said. If you do this let me know I have a schematic that should work. If you goin in an auto you can put it on a push button or some guys are using a pressure switch on the brake line to activate it

I would say it depends on what you need.

Personally, I'm not a fan of ign. boxes on the LT1 unless its really needed(forced induction, nitrous, etc)

With a 6al2 box you get 2 step, possibility to wire in shift light, extra rev limiter becuase why not, and you can get multiple spark distribution becuause thats what it does haha. Only first 2 are important imo

So 6AL2 is my best bet? Then how about wiring it in?

Pretty basic, get plug in harness, run tach and 2 step wires into cars. I tapped into my fuse box on the side of the dash and ran hot wire to my quarter stick shifter button. Tack i ran to my pillar and used a raptor shift light and hooked that up and walla, all set up

Would you mind explaining a little more about how to use the cruise switch for 2 step activation. I'm a 6 speed guy.

Hey guys. New to the website and I just recently bought a 95 trans am with the lt1 but mine has been turned to run spray and has little stuff done to it. I'm wanting to run the msd direct plug in 2 step wanting to know if there was any cautions I should worry about or anything.
