Take it out and look at the gear. If the teeth are in good nick, put it back in and don't worry about it. Loads of people running aftermarket cams with OEM drives with zero issues.

I got a stock gear with an all metal oil pump drive shaft.

If I recall, it's a Melling IS-55E.

A long time ago you ran a bronze gear with a billet cam. what ever happened to that? Only when using a distributor?

I missed the part about a billet cam and a cast gear. My cam is just a CC503.....nothing special with the metals in that to my knowledge(beyond the normal manufacturing processes for a small block hydraulic cam).

I'm not sure what the OPs cam would need. I do remember some issues where it was believed the stock oil pump drive gear would not work. I can't remember the specifics though.

In this link check out NightTrain66(LE) post 21. If you have a cast gear, the stock drive gear will be fine. If the gear is billet with the cam, then you will need a billet drive gear.

stock cam drive gear and a cast gear on a billet cam is fine

just don't over TQ the small bolt that holds the cam drive. the top is plastic and gets brittle

IMO when changing a cam you should use a new oil pump drive so the gears wear in together. The stock gears on drives from GM are Melonized. I have a brand new spare drive I bought in case GM decides to quit making them. I'll sell it to you for a great price, lmk.
