Default ABS INOP light comes on after I drive a couple blocks

It goes on when I start it, then goes out. I drive a few blocks then comes on. The rear brakes are not engaging. Just the front. 1994 Z-28, LT-1, Automatic

Once the car is started the ABS module does a diagnostic in making sure the circuit is closed. If it comes on while moving most likely there is a sensor out. To find out which one you'll have to take it somewhere that can scan the ABS module. How do you know the rear brakes are not engaging? That's another problem all in itself.

I had problems with intermittent ABS lights but all my brakes still worked, just not the ABS. Turned out the wires broke off the rear sensor over time. I have an aftermarket sensor so that may not be your issue.

If you have a laptop with an OBD1 cable you can download Scan9495 and retrieve your ABS code yourself. It's how I discovered what code I had, great piece of software. It will also tell you any other code you may experience including airbags, completely eliminating the need to take it to a dealership for their Tech 2 scanners. You can read about Scan9495 and download here:

For making the USB to OBD1 12-pin, does one need a specific type of USB cable? Or can it be just any regular USB cable with red, white, green and black?

As odd as it may be. Check your 3rd brake light. Mine went out and triggered the abs light to come on. Could be that simple. I had no idea. Just a thought

The OP in the link I posted included a write up for making your own cable.

Yeah but it doesn't say if I can cut off the micro-usb part off a phone charger and use that. Same colored wires but again, doesn't say.

If it works, I'll report back.
