Car was not acting up at all but I did an msd cap and rotor on the opti because i was changing the opti and crank seal anyways. the opti looks good inside. No water, dust or corrosion in it. I"m just surprised mine still works after all the horror stories we see online.

Just goes to show that people make a bigger deal out of those optisparks then they need to. I've never had an optispark failure during my 13 years of LT1 ownership (2 different cars). The water pump weep hole being directly above the optispark is a shitty design and I think that's what ultimately gave/gives the opti a bad wrap since coolant can drip directly onto and destroy the unit. The optispark itself is a fine unit IMO, just have to make sure to keep them dry and they get the job done.

I can't remember how many miles are on my current opti but I want to say I'm pushing 80k plus. Mind you this engine and opti have been in two different cars now. It sat for one year on a stand only to then sit for three more years in a car outside while I was gone only being cranked occasionally. Soon the opti will be moved over to my stroker which should be done later this week. I've had no issues.

It also helps when the original owners realize the cap and rotor are wear items and should be replaced just as any other distributor. Congrats on the long life.

People these days don't understand that and are the same ones that bash the opti for all their own idiotic problems.

It needs to be serviced just like brake pads/rotors/spark plugs. But it's out of sight out of mind nestled away under the WP.

It does make me wonder how many good optis have been tossed over the years only because they got wet for one reason or another. I still have my stock one as a backup. It did the loose rotor screws thing after 30,000 miles, but thankfully someone knew what the issue was and I was able to repair it.

Probably going to go out tomorrow now that I said something.
I recently rebuilt my original engine that had 224k and I'm pretty sure it had the original opti in it. I reused the opti. I have never touched it other then putting a MSD cap and rotor on it. Everything seemed fine, if it isn't broke don't fix it.
