Yeah its usally the rotating assembly internals, you have to get your block machined, when you have it all together its a short block. You bring the machine shop just the block and nothing else, you can reuse your own or find one. I wouldnt reuse the water pump from another motor, alternator and the rest dont have any thing to do with it. When your looking for a core your just looking for the stock short block or a bare block, you dont need the complete motor with accesories you just need block to be bored and machined. Looking at kits make sure the kit is for a 87+ SBC, you need a crank with a 1 peae rear main seal.

No one makes an after market block for the LT1s, your stock block is a two bolt main, you can upgrade to a 4 bolt out of a 92-96 Vette but a 2 bolt in most aplication will hold up just fine. The stock Lt1 block is iron and will take some abuse, Big Rick ran 8.08 at 172 on a LT1 block, that car was making 1238rwhp, through a glide and 9 inch, imagine the fly wheel HP. The LT1 blocks when built right are stout and can handle more than what prety much any one can throw at them.
