Default Entirely too loud Magnaflow, What to do.

Ok guys before you start shooting. It is entirely too loud I have mac mids, no cats LT4-Hotcam it on a 97 LT1. I am using the 98-02 magnaflow system. It sounds good at idle and at a low speed cruise. But at 70 it has a drone that is driving me up a wall. I was contemplating getting rid of the 3.5 x foot long tips and going with a set of small oval magnaflow tips. I do not want it quiet just not as loud. What do you think??

tips arent going to make it quieter at all, but catalytic converters will.

I'll take the magnaflow system off your hands lol. The tips won't make a difference with the drone. The only thing I can think of off-hand would be to maybe install cats or put a resonator in-line, if that's possible for you.

It has a catted y but I punched them. I bought the headers off here and they were perfect but the cats were rattling when I got them installed. I used a set of 93-95 mac mids with the SLP pipe.

Hmm I wonder why the cats were rattling. I've never heard of that before. But yea, if it was once a catted Y, then you should have no problem putting them back in. High-flow cats won't really cut down on the Db rating at WOT, but will definitely take out some of the drone at cruising.

Or you could swap out the muffler. After my Hooker broke in, its perfect. Its loud with pretty much ZERO drone. Im not sure how much cats cost, but the Hooker was only 80$

Hi Flow cats should help it alot and if it is too loud still like previously stated you can add an in-line resinator. usually when the cats are rattling the insides have started to break loose and is your first sign of or sound of needing to replace them because if you don't the insides break loose and end up in the muffler and things start getting expensive then.

Yea tips make alot bigger difference then you think. I'm a welder/bender at a custom exhaust shop and when people come in looking for a deeper louder tone, they go bigger tips. Going to a smaller tip will help but prolly not as much as you want. I'd try that first before i messed with high flow cats.

Are you serious ? All the cars and trucks we did when I worked for a muffler shop back in the day the tips really made no sound difference to me. But hey I have been wrong before.

I can see how big tips would have a megaphone effect...

Rattling cats is a sign that the material inside has broken resulting in needing a new cat. It does its job still, but to a point. I have seen it quite often actually.

That was described perfectly. I customize exhaust as well, and for that reason, I hate the vehicles with oversized tips on them. They always seem to distort the the tone of the exhaust.

I have big *** 4" tips on my magnaflow. Very deep and bassy. Could be a little louder, but that's nothing the LTs and ORY won't fix

tips do make a difference. when I changed them from the stockers to something else on my old '94 (just a tip change, exhaust was already done) the tone changed dramatically.

I knew larger tips made a difference in exhaust note, but is it really THAT dramatic? If so, maybe I'll invest in new tips...
