Default New to the F-Body World, Your help is needed...

Well, my 99 Mustang GT was recently totalled and I picked up a 97 Trans Am with 6spd for only $7500 and the car has right at 66,xxx miles on it.

I'm pretty much new to the LT1 world since all I really know is the modular power robber 4.6 motor.

My questions for you guys are...

Anything different I need to look for and doing maintenance?

What freaking oil does Pontiac recommend because I cannot find it in the freaking owners manual?

And then for the performance stuff,

I'm looking to make 450rwhp N/A and I've been browsing this forum for a while and I think I'm going to go for Heads, Cam, LT Headers, and a dyno tune. With these upgrades, will I reach my power goals?

Right now the car has as listed:

- SLP Loudmouth Exhaust
- SLP Cold Air Intake
- Electric Water Pump
- Hypertech Handheld Tune
- Hurt Short Shifter
- 4.56 Gears
- Eibach Springs

Also, is there any parts I just need to upgrade right now before I tackle the heads, cam and all or should I just dive right into it?

Thanks for you help guys, looking forward to posting on this forum alot more.

Pics of my car:

That's a sharp car, someone had some plans for it. As far as oil type, I would go with 10W30, since everything is already broke in. The Factory type is 5W30, and it can be found on the Oil fill cap on the Valve cover. With the Cam, get some different Valve Springs, and 1.6 Roller rockers.

Thanks man.

Got another question for you guys. What are the best sites for good prices on parts and stuff? Only one I've found that has a good selection is www.thunderracing.com

www.slponline.com kind of pricey on some items but worth the extra money in my opinion.

i would have to disagree with that, in my opinion your just paying extra money for the slp name. for example a k&n cai works just as well as the slp cai but for a cheaper price

Man that car looks good as hell! Make sure you do not neglect your opti-spark or water pump...Update them every so often. You can just repalce the cap and rotor in the opti if you keep up with them.
I love my LT1
Good luck with it!

Yeah, the whole goal of my car search was to find a 96-98 Cobra for under $10K but every Cobra that I found had a Salvage Title on it. I then started to look for an LS1 and seriously, you can't find a LS1 in good shape for under $15K in Virginia. My buddy then called me up and asked if maybe I wanted an LT1 and I said heck yes because at the time I was looking into maybe getting a 4 cylinder and just turbo'ing it until I had the money for a V8. I went to look at the car the next day and I told him I would buy it. Car just needs new front tires and that's it. It's in excellent shape...

I was actually going to make a left hand turn at an intersection and I didn't have the arrow so I had to yield to oncoming traffic. I did, didn't see anything and as soon as my nose gets into the last lane to cross this guy comes flying through the intersection and nails me. Of course I got the ticket for Failure to Yield to Oncoming Traffic but we are going to court to prove he was speeding. The posted speed limit at that intersection was 35MPH and that is definitely more than 35MPH worth of damage. The law says, when exceeding the speed limit you loose your right of way and we are going to prove that. Another fucked up part about the accident was that the guy wasn't even wearing his seatbelt which is illegal in VA and he didn't even get a ticket. I mean this guy's seat was leaned back against his rear seats and his head left a pretty good domed crack in the windshield.

Well atleast the Dumb **** didn't get out of it with nothing.. Some guy hit and run my Z, hit me in the back right causing me to spin out at 25mph on a wet road(I was going slow cause of the water), recovered the spin and went off the road on some grass, clipped a telephone pole on the back right, and landed in a Rally's parking lot. The guy took off up the road. I got out, looked at it, and drove it home. Fixed it with a Dremel, and $300, no joke. Just needs a paint job.

Right now you'll see your biggest gains with LT headers. You can get the pacesetter LTs and ORY for 425 out the door from summit. Best bang for the buck header period. I have them and they kick ***.

After that, check out eportworks.com. $1100 and you can get 380 rwhp.

That is what I am doing when I get back, fixing the head gasket, and installing LT's.

Well here's the thing. SLP has been and still is a contract company for GM. SLP's parts are engineered from GM's specs. Most of the other companies parts are reverse engineered, which means they get a car, or specs that are suppose to be right, and take measurements of their own and create aftermarket parts. So in response to that, do you want to buy a caddy or a pinto?
