Default 12-bolt or 9"?

I've had many tell me one way or the other, but not sure what to go with in the end. They're both roughly the same prices, but if you guys had a choice, which one would it be, and why?

Im not sure but from what I have heard the 9" is better. I think that some diesel trucks have the "9 so it must be pretty strong. Again im new to this so im not 100% sure.

well this should probably be in the gears and axles forum but from what i've seen around here if you are going the route buying a moser 12 bolt or 9inch already set up for the f-body then from what i've seen most people say if you are auto go with the 12 bolts unless you plan on making your car a track monster and if you've got the m6 go with the 9inch because of the higher shock load to the rear end

but if its going to be a mild track beast either would suffice i believe the 9inch rear will suck a little more power compared to the 12 bolt but probably not much

and if your trying to adapt a rear to fit in your car i have heard the 9inch fords are easier to adapt than a gm 12 bolt from other vehicles

Isnt it easier to hook a Aftermarket TA to the 9" as well?

i believe that is correct but another thing you gotta figure out is how to set up a reluctor wheel so your abs will be operational unless you just want to disable it

ABS is a crutch... J/k I thought you could still run Three chanel on the 9"(no traction control) I just found this FYI http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/te...les/0304_nine/

Word on the forums is 9" for M6 and 12 bolt for autos. I like the 9" so I can change the centers. One for drag and one for long hauls.

I like my 9" pretty well. Not any harder to work on than a 10 bolt. Might be overkill for my setup though.

9" all the way....

With the right equipment the 9" will handle everything you will ever throw at it...... Friends of mine have had built 12 bolts and have broken them. then again i've seen 12 bolts runnin low 8's setup right..... I have yet to see a built 9" take a dump however....

Who knows what power your car will have in 10 years..... So buy what you know is gonna last. long after your motor is toast that 9" will still be chillin under there happy as hell...

If you street drive it buy a 9" with a posi, if you are serious strip guy but still want occasional street duty buy a billet pinion support, nodular case and a detroit locker.... if you're all out track i'd say aluminum case, spool, and the billet pinion support.... A 9" is more stout no matter what way you look at it...

heres prolly the simplest breakdown
9" more power loss stronger rear end
12bolt less power loss not as strong as the 9in
it just depends on what your going to be doing with it one of my friends in a LS1 is running a 12 bolt in a M6 to 11.5's before cam hasnt run it since he got the T-Rex in it so hes hoping for 10's so 12 bolts can take a beating also but the 9in can just take more but like i said it all depends on what your going to be doing and how much power your making....
also this might be expensive as hell but i got a friend with a A4 H/C LS1 Firehawk running 11.80s on the stock rear end but he has a DANA 60 on order to go in it how hes fitting it in there i have no idea but he says he can do it and he payed for it already and he says it should be stronger than the 9in and less power loss than the 12 bolt but we will see im ready to see what his car runs with a decent rear end

Yep, that is why I bought the Camaro. I want a good reliable bracket racer that will go 13's all day long, maybe even a few 12s...

Basicly a hard stick driver will rip 12 bolt gears apart on a regular basis. I beat the hell out of my 12 bolt with an auto and it is fine.

basicly unless you have three channel ABS and want to keep it get a 9in

Till you get a transbrake and then you're back at square 1 (breaking 12 bolts)....

Just a thought about autos.... cuz eventually most hardcore guys will go to a tranny with a brake..... and then it hits harder than a stick.....

Trans brake!?!?!

Again... race car

No I agree. The brake and large stall ratios are about as good as side stepping a clutch
