I have a 96 formula and the cooling fans wont come on. I checked relays and there good. i pulled relays and put jumpers in and they come on. factory service manual says change pcm but i dont want to do that if thats not it. Is this common or am i overlookking something or do i have any other options that will turn them on automatically. please help

Do they come on once the temp gets past 225? If not a tune is not going to fix it.

yeah stock programming fans dont come on until high temps. If AC is run the primary fan should be on (passenger side). if you pull the connector for the ECT in the front of the Waterpump both fans should come on in about 10-15 secs.

I have a 97 formula also and my cooling fans cut out last summer. If i continue to let it run it will run 260+ and boils over. I hooked up a manual fan switch and it cools fine. I just sent my PCM out for tuning and am having the fans reset and lowered and hopefully that will cure the problem

If you turn on the A/C both fans should come on. If not you may have wiring or PCM problem. But if you jumper them on and they run, that says the fans are good. Check to see if the relays are pulling in when the A/C is on, if not the PCM may not be telling them to or you may have a wiring issue from the PCM to the relays.

your coolant temp sensor in the water pump could be bad--that's why my fans never turned on.

I had this problem on my 94 formula... there are actually two sensors which could be at fault. One is the coolant temp sensor which is halfway down the passenger side of the block. The other is the oil temp, I replaced both for about $12 each at autozone. This got my fans running at the factory determined setting which is 235 i believe??, or somthing very close to that. For performance, I also installed a 160 stat and instructed both the primary and secondary fans to come on at 185 with a power programmer. Good luck!

yes that's exactly what I said...the sensor in your head has nothing to do with your fans, it only sends a reading to the temperature gauge on your dash.

I had the same problem not even 4 months ago. I replaced all of my sensors since it was recommended to me and it solved nothing. I ended up having to hard wire my fans into a switch and now I have no problems what so ever. All I did was buy a 50A switch (since the amperes peak at 43 when turning on) and some 16 gauge wire. $20 and it was fixed. It was a simple solution for me and hopefully it will be for you too.

What/where is the cheapest way to reprogram the fans to come on at, say, 190 instead of the factory 220 ish? My uncle's having a terrible time with his 97 Z28 and I'd love to help out with it anyway I can.

cheapest would be a mail order tune. You can get a basic tune for 50-75.
