Default dissapointing LT1 dyno #'s ... come and read

Alright, so i go to the local dyno shop just to check it out and see what their all about. Within 20 minutes i was convinced to dyno my car .... so what the hell, i did. He did 3 runs, the first was in 3rd gear, and the last 2 were in 4th gear.

Problems with the car: my coolant is all f'd up, always reading low coolant light and i have many air pockets in there. The guy was dyno'ing my car and the needle was at like 215°. Also, I have a few exhaust leaks. Lastly, ive been using 89 octane instead of 93 cuz of gas prices (shouldnt really matter)

Run 1: (3rd gear)

Max Power: 250.08
Max Torque: 279.95

Run 2: (4th gear)

Max Power: 259.98
Max Torque: 297.83

Run 3: (4th gear)

Max Power: 263.75
Max Torque: 299.42

what do you all think about these results? I was reading an article and read that my car dyno'd stock 274rwhp. mods are in signature, but hmm im generally dissapointed. I was expecting 300rwhp at the most. Lemme hear what you all have to say

What kind of knock sensor are you running? going to 93 oct will help. I bet your are getting alot of KR and thats killing your power. Also why in the hell did he do a 3rd gear pull?

Your a little low for your mods. My car made 276rwhp through a auto with similar mods as you. If I had to guess I would have said you would have dynoed 290rwhp with your set up.

Bone stock is somewhere in the 240 - 250 range

oh ok 4th gear is the 1:1 Get a LT4KM a few of my buddys put headers on their cars and they were getting constant 6* KR from the extra noise. Also 93 does help keeping knock down and you will make more power.

Numbers don't sound too bad, I would definately stay with the higher octane gas if your worried about power. No it won't make a huge difference but there will be a difference. These are performance vehicles, they don't like cheap gas. I would also suggest a tune.

What kind of dyno was it?
Is your Rearend/Axles strong?

I'd suggest a tune also. madz28 tuning or PCMforless

What kind of shop doesn't know that 4th gear (on a stick car) is a 1:1 ratio?

I'll never understand why people put cheaper gas in their cars? 89 octane is generally 10 cents cheaper than 93 octane. Let's say you fill up with 15 gallons. 15 gallons X 10 cents = $1.50. Yep... that's right you "saved" all of $1.50. "Saving" $1.50 will get you decreased mpg and decreased performance as the knock sensor will pull timing... hence a reduction in power.

Your numbers don't sound too far off. What was the air intake temp? A cooler running engine will generate a few more horsepower. Where are these exhaust leaks? Install the long tubes and get a dyno tune (not from a shop that doesn't know that 4th gear is a 1:1 ration for a stick).

So bleed the coolant and put some decent gas in and you'll be right where you're supposed to be. If you're worried about gas prices buy a Honda.

Not to be off topic but....I ran LT's on a stock Knock Module for a couple weeks. Say I had some KR, would that KR go away once I put the LT4 Knock Module on?

yes it would but in the mad z28 tuning he desensitizes the knock sensor so their is no need for the lt4 sensor.

I love it when people spend over $1000 in mods then put 89 in and save $1.50 a tank to make it as slow as a stock car...

christ whats the big deal if i put 89 in there. i wasnt expecting to run on a dyno yesterday so its no big deal. I plan on fixing my coolant problem and gettin longtubes installed asap once they arrive in the mail.

i figure with the new longtubes, 93 octane,a cooler running engine, and a lt4 km i should produce close to 295rwhp. HOPEFULLY.

goal by the end of this summer is to have 320+

you can also pull out your knock sensor and wrap a line of teflon tape around it and screw it back in. This will muff some of the noise

The "big deal" is that you are not saving any money by putting the cheaper gas in the tank. Once again... the money that you "save" is offset in the poor fuel economy (not to mention poor performance as reflected in your dyno numbers). Just put the good stuff in there and be done with it.

People bitch and complain about gas prices and face it... we can't do anything about it. However... here are a couple ways "offset" what we spend at the pump:

Rent a movie instead of going to the movies.

Drink 4 Coronas at the bar instead of 8.

Pass on that 4th lap dance at the end of the evening. You're not going home with the stripper after 3 lap dances anyway and the 4th lap dance isn't going to change her mind.

Now there's a guy who knows about saving a buck. But one day that stripper, on the 4th lap dance, will go home with me. My daddy always told me, if at first you don't succeed, try try again.
