Default Noob needs help, What to do with $7500

I am considering buying this 96 camaro for $6500 down the way from me. Its got 6X,XXX miles on it and is a manual. Ive never owned a domestic car and just recently decided that Im tired of owning hondas and other imports. I want something bigger, something that I liiked when I was a teenager.

So heres the long and short of it. After selling my import related stuff I have 7500 dollars. I want to spend this on the motor itself, and I will upgrade suspension and brakes in the next year or so, piece by piece. This isnt a daily driver, but is needed to be street worth and also good for a couple trips to the track a month. And it needs to be reliable.

I will be doing all labor myself (me and a friend who has built several stroked, ect LT1s) Hopw can I reliably go the fastest for my $7500? I wont rule out nitrous, althoguh Id rather be stroked or blown. Id really like an 11 sec. car.....can it be done?

Do the suspension first, then a 12 bolt, then do motor/tranny. That is the smart order to go imho. If you go that way when you do build you motor you dont have to worry about breaking you drivetrain.

thats the best advice, but unfortunately the most boring way to do it, i know im doing it wrong but i cant help it, im putting a cam and some heads that im going to port out a bit and very little suspension and just 4.10's, the best way to do it is what they said, but the most fun way to do it and probably the more costly way (break stuff) is my way

I also agree. I know this guy...well a friend of mine put an LT4 kit in with a custom grind cam from TPIS. Car sounded mean as hell. His first night at the track with it broke his rearend. After a rebuild and some 4.10 gears, broke the drive shaft. Next time out there went his clutch. It finally worked his way up to his radiator that poped doing a burnout.

You can have all the power in the world but if you cant put it to the ground it's pointless. Remember these words No traction No action. You put power to your motor without changing anything else, some **** is gonna break.

This was only with 340 rwhp

you need a little more then $7500 to do all that your talking about, a proper supercharger set up needs a lower cr bottom end, preferably forged and balanced, good cam and heads for it and then you might look at 650, it would easily cost you 10K if you did all the work yourself other than the machine work. Its a bit more complicated then that

If you want to do the motor first, I would get a forged 383-396 shortblock from VRE, and get some ported trickflow heads from TEA, and a custom cam. That should get you 450rwhp N/A all day, and you will be ready to spray a 200-300 shot all day when you get the $$ and drivetrain for it.

i would go to advancedinduction.com and look around at some of the head/cam packages they have. You could buy a super nice h/c setup and then build a stroker or 355 to put underneath it, without spending more than 7500. With or without spray 11's should be easy to come by.

There are a thousand routes you could go. The most cost effective will most likely be a high comp forged 350/355 with a 100-150 shot of nitrous on a T56 and worked rear. Put a tire on it for the track, leave street tires on it for a DD. You can get a great H/C package from either Advanced Induction or Lloyd Elliot for CHEAP. If I buy another LT1, this is the route that I'll go.

Whatever you decide to do, stick around here. There are plenty of LT1 veterans here and on camaroz28.com, ask them anything you need to know. They helped me out tons with my old LT1 before I sold it.

Probably the worst advice ever given in this forum. DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS GUY. Take his typing, for example. If you SeE somONe typinG Like THIS do NOt listen TO thEM. If his typing is that fucked up just imagine what his car is like.

"Port the motor"?

I agree with everyone else, on a manual you definitely need to do the rear before the motor.

So you have $7500 after buying the car? Buy a rear end 1700-2000. Heads & cam and spray, Prostars with M/t radials. 11's should be there, owww a clutch to hold.

Buy a used supercharger setup and then buy a long block built for boost.

I would say you are looking at $2000 for a used Vortech setup. Then you should have enough to build or buy a nice long block.

Remember though... with fuel injected cars you have to take a ton of things int oconsideration. You have the cost of tuning. The cost of the fuel system to support high hp numbers. Then the cost of everything your newfound power brakes..
