Default Timing Chain question with LT4 Hotcam

Hey All,

I'm getting ready to install the LT4 Hot Cam kit, and I was wondering if I should replace my stock LT1 timing chain??

The stock chain only has 25,XXX miles on it, so is it necessary to replace that?

Thanks!

The heavy duty timing chain kit for an LT4/LT1 is a little tougher, but if youre stock one is in good shape, you should be good to go.

well to each is own ,but I say install a heavy duty chain since you are already there. It's better to play it safe than sorry.

The stock LT1 one is recommended not to exceed 5700 rpm. Depends on what you have your car tuned to. I still have my stock one, and have had no problems with it.

I would just put on a double roller. Pretty cheap about $80 from not sure if they are a vendor. I thought it was easy to install too.

I'd get the LT4 timing chain at least, even though it's a smaller cam. At the best rate, You could get an electric water pump and buy a double timing chain, free up about 10rwhp over the cam..Plus the double is cheaper than the single, Cloyes is among trusted brands.

"Heavy Duty" LT1/LT4 timing chains are COMPLETELY overrated. For the price of one, you can buy an electric water pump and a Summit double roller timing chain, plus still have $80 left over. The Summit one is only $36, and is leaps and bounds ahead of those so-called "heavy duty" kits. I mean, just look at the difference:

CSR water pump: $180
Summit timing chain: $36
= $216

LT1/LT4 "Extreme Duty" timing chain kit: $300

Keep in mind this only works for pin-driven optisparks with electric water pump, but that's no problem for you since you have a 97. Everyone should have an electric water pump anyway!
