Default I think I broke the rear end

The other night when I hit the gas hard and the tranny downshifted to 2nd, I heard a loud "bang" sound twice, accompanied by a jolt that felt like it came from the back of the car. Now, every time it shifts from 1st to 2nd with moderate acceleration, I get the same noise and jolt. The 1-2 shift is very firm because I put in a shift kit a few months ago. I suspect the spider gears got damaged, but am not sure since I haven't had a chance to look at it yet.

I'm thinking about upgrading gears while I've got it apart. Right now I have the stock 2.73's. What gear would be good for my application? I've seen some people with LS1's say you shouldn't run high gears with a turbo. I was thinking 3.42's originally, but now I'm wondering if 3.23's would be better. Any thoughts?

3.42....its a good gear...with a4 and boost.....
but it sounds to me more like the tranny is the culprite...the rear should do it during all shifts/speeds

Oh, man, I never even thought of the tranny mount. That would be sweet if that's all it is! I'll take a look at it tonight and post what I find.

I just read a couple posts the other day where people broke their tranny mounts, lol. Must be contagious.

Its real common on these LT1 cars... You need a jack to check it, just looking at it wont tell you ****. Get the car on stands, place the jack under the trans and jack up just slightly, if the mounts broken you'll see a split in the rubber open up as you jack.

Get a poly mount this time and forget about it, it wont break again.

I just removed the mount this evening, and sure enough, it's split right in half. Thanks for the help and saving me some time in finding the problem!
