Default Opti filled with oil, from where?

So the reason my 96 WS6 won't run is that there is about a 1/2 cup of engine oil in the opti. The lip seal behind it was relatively dry, and the source of the annoying oil leak it had was the opti leaking itself.

Question: Where did it come from? I noted on the new unit that there is 2 o-rings on the shaft that fits into the cam, is there oil running into opti bearings from there? I cannot believe that the lip seal was bad as the timing cover was only minimally dirty/oily..

Anoyone have thoughts?

Did you notice any oil in either of the optispark vent hoses? It's possible that you're getting oil blown in through the hose that runs from the valve cover to the throttle body and some of that oil is getting sucked out of the intake through an opti vent hose.

Don't worry about where oil is entering the opti, worry about where it's exiting the motor.

My fresh air hose is routed to the air inlet before the MAF and not the valve cover.

Yeah I thought about that, but it was dry behind the opti. There are two o-rings on the shaft that plugs into the cam itself, I wonder if those could have been leaking...

Does anyone know if the opti bearings are oiled through the motor's lubrication system, or are they "perma-lubed?"
